The Suzuki Vitara is an off-road vehicle from the Japanese automobile, motorcycle and marine manufacturer Suzuki . It was introduced in Germany from summer 1988 in parallel to the Samurai , which was still on offer, as a three-door model with a short wheelbase, was available as a convertible or with a steel roof and had a 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine.

In the fall of 1990, Suzuki supplemented this version with a five-door variant with a 28 cm longer wheelbase, which was also known as the Vitara Long . The three-door model also benefited from its 16-valve gasoline engine with 71 kW (97 hp) from 1995.

From this year the five-door was optionally available with a 2.0-liter V6 gasoline engine with 100 kW (136 hp), the safety equipment of which included two airbags.

At the beginning of 1996, Suzuki provided the petrol-powered five-door with a turbodiesel with a displacement of 2.0 liters, which was initially only available with an automatic. In the same year, the two-door models also received two front airbags.

In 1997 the turbodiesel increased to 65 kW (88 hp) thanks to the intercooler and was optionally available with a manual gearbox. The three-door model was now also available with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 97 kW (132 hp).

In spring 1998, Suzuki replaced the Vitara in Germany with the Grand Vitara , while the previous Vitara was only produced in Spain. Currently, the Vitara is still manufactured under the Chevrolet brand name . The only remaining manufacturer is the Ecuadorian AYMESA .
