The Maruti Zen is a small car manufactured in India by the Maruti Suzuki India company .

It is largely identical to the 1994 Suzuki Alto planned as a world car , which was also manufactured by Maruti. However, the Zen is only available with five doors. The four-cylinder gasoline engine with 993 cm³ displacement and an output of 40 kW (54 PS) also comes from Suzuki and was also used in the export version of the Alto.

In 1998, the Zen D was the first Maruti passenger car with a diesel engine . The engine came from Peugeot , made 42 kW (57 hp) with a displacement of 1527 cm³ and was also used in the Peugeot 106 and the Citroën AX . Production of the diesel variant was discontinued in 2005.

Today, Maruti Zen is offered in India and the neighboring countries of South Asia as well as in parts of Africa and South America . In some countries it is referred to as Alto.

The Zen can be seen as a more modern version of the Maruti 800 , which was discontinued in 2013. Compared to the 800, the Zen is more spacious and more powerful and offers five instead of four seats.

In December 2006, Maruti introduced the new model of Zen in India. The new Zen differs from its predecessor in particular through its contemporary design and the more spacious interior. The new engine is a four-valve unit with a displacement of 1061 cm³ and now produces 64 hp. The top model of the new Zen is now also available with a driver airbag and ABS. Air conditioning is standard in all models of the new Zen. The new Zen is offered around 2,000 EUR cheaper than the new Suzuki Swift and costs about as much as the Hyundai Santro, which has been on the market in almost unchanged form since mid-1998. In India, the new Zen is given a good chance of building on the sales success of its predecessor.
