Peugeot 106
Production period: 1991-2003
Class : Microcar
Body versions : Station wagon
Previous model: Peugeot 104
Successor: Peugeot 107

The Peugeot 106 is a small car model and part of the 100 series from the French manufacturer Peugeot . It thus marked the lower limit of the model range and was produced from autumn 1991 to the end of 2003. A total of 2,798,200 copies were produced in the Mülhausen and Aulnay-sous-Bois plants near Paris. He has been succeeded by the Peugeot 107 since spring 2005 .

The model was produced in two series, the first (S1) from September 1991 to April 1996 and the second (S2; PSA-internally called restyl ) from May 1996 to December 2003. The 106 S1 is based on the one a few years earlier introduced Citroën AX , while the 106 S2 is technically almost identical to the Citroën Saxo .

The models from May 1996 onwards differ from the S1 model with a facelift and rounded body , although the dimensions have hardly changed. Since the Citroën AX and the first series of the 106 only had a few identical parts, PSA paid attention to as many shared components as possible when designing the S2.

Engines

The vehicles of the first series in particular were relatively light; this was the declared development goal for the Citroën AX (from which the car was derived). This enabled comparatively good driving performance to be achieved even with the smaller engines. The XSI model with the 1.4-liter engine (94/98 hp) in particular was very fast for a small car with a top speed of around 200 km / h and an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in under ten seconds. The "normal" gasoline engines, with the exception of the XSI, Rallye and GTI, were initially equipped with single-point manifold injection. They were later replaced by engines with manifold injection, in which each cylinder has its own injection nozzle. Few vehicles, especially those built for the Eastern European market, had a carburetor.

Body and chassis

The chassis was provided with MacPherson struts at the front and parallel swing arms and torsion bars at the rear. A high level of rust resistance was achieved through the use of galvanized sheet metal, plastic wheel arch linings and cavity seals. The drive block, floor pan and chassis are taken from the Citroën AX, but the body is completely independent and there are no identical parts. The second series was specially modified at the front in order to achieve better crash behavior, which made the car about 10 centimeters longer. This version is also based on Citroën's AX successor, Saxo, which was now almost identical in the body - apart from the grille mask.

Electric version

The PSA group started its experiments with alternative drive technology in 1991 . The Peugeot electric vehicle was tested in the French city of La Rochelle and developed further until it was ready for series production . Both the 106 and the Citroën AX and Saxo were available as electric cars.

Peugeot 106 bemani

In 2002, the Swiss company bemani motorenbau AG offered the Peugeot 106 together with the Citroën Saxo with an output of 163 hp and a torque of 217 Nm. Thanks to a compressor system developed by bemani, this version accelerated from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.3 seconds.

Success in motorsport

A Peugeot 106 S1 maxi as used in various rally sport competitions

In 1997 and 1998 the Czech driver Jaroslav Kalný managed to win the FIA European Rallycross Championship in the class up to 1400 cm 3 for two years in a row .
