The first generation is based on the Peugeot 308 with an extended wheelbase, which appeared in the summer of 2007, but in contrast to this it is a notchback sedan . In contrast to Europe, in China and Brazil the models with this body variant are in demand in the lower middle class. In China, only a notchback version of the predecessor 307 was offered. An introduction in Europe is not planned, because there is the Peugeot 508 I (also planned for the Chinese market) .

Parallel to the 408, the Peugeot 308 has also been available as a notchback in China since the beginning of 2012. The comparable sister models of the Citroën brand based on the C4 are also available with short and long wheelbases (C-Quatre and C-Triomphe).

According to Peugeot, there were already more than 30,000 pre-orders when the model was launched.

The first generation of the 408 will continue to be produced in South America and the CIS countries after the introduction of the second generation. The new 408 is not available here.

The Dongfeng Fengshen L60 , introduced in 2015, is based on the first 408 generation.
