The Peugeot 309 is a lower middle class car that was produced from the fall of 1985 to the end of 1993.
development
Since August 1979 the PSA Group consisted of the three brands Peugeot , Citroën and Talbot . However, the PSA board decided in mid-1984 to phase out the Talbot brand, only the Talbot Horizon should be produced until mid-1986.
In 1980 a project for a hatchback sedan with the code C28 started. The press gave this sedan the names Talbot Arizona or Peugeot 206 , among others . Contrary to popular belief that this project was Talbot's, it was a Peugeot project.
At Peugeot, the Peugeot 305 , introduced in autumn 1977, was about to be replaced by the Peugeot 405 , which was, however, positioned one class higher. In the small car segment, the success of the 205 introduced in the summer of 1983 became apparent. The compact class (or lower middle class) would no longer be occupied.
history
In October 1985, the five-door variant of the Peugeot 309 was first presented. It was also produced in England - at the Ryton-on-Dunsmore plant near Coventry . It was also made in the former Talbot factory in Poissy . The body was developed from the Peugeot Vera plus study presented in 1982.
In September 1986 a diesel engine with 1905 cc and 49 kW (65 hp) was introduced. From the beginning of 1987 the 309 was also available as a three-door (in most versions). The technical model name was 10A (five-door) or 10C (three-door). The 1905 cc petrol engine in the 309 GTI 1.9 was added. The offer was supplemented by two basic versions with the equipment letter A, which were only offered as three-door and with one of three engines: 1118 cm³ and 1294 cm³ petrol and 1905 cm³ diesel.
At the beginning of production, the Simca Poissy motors from the Talbot range, known from the previous Horizon model, were installed. For the German market, the GRi (SRi on other markets) with the 1580 cm³ engine XU J1 from the 205 GTi 1.6 with an emission control system Puls-Air and unleaded premium petrol (ROZ95) was offered for the German market as early as April 1986 to use the tax breaks for emission-controlled vehicles. This engine had an output of 77 kW (104 hp) with low emission control. From August 1987, the Talbot engines were gradually replaced by OHC Peugeot engines (code letter XU). At the same time, the design of the rear section changed, as the rear panels were painted in the same color as the car, whereas they were previously gray-black or were made of unpainted plastic.
In September 1988 the offer was changed. The GT was replaced by the SX, which was also powered by a 1580 cm³ engine, the output of which was increased from 59 kW (80 hp) to 68 kW (92 hp).
Facelift
In July 1989 the 309 received a facelift. It has been thoroughly revised technically and visually. The OHV engines from Talbot (1118 cm³ and 1294 cm³) were replaced by Peugeot engines with 1124 cm³ and 1360 cm³. There were also two new offers: a 1769 cm³ turbodiesel with 57 kW (78 hp) and a 1905 cm³ 16V with 118 kW (160 hp). Both came from the 405. The transmission was also revised. The reverse gear was now opposite the 5th gear instead of next to the first gear.
The vehicles can be recognized from the outside mainly by the changes to the bodywork at the front and rear. The loading sill of the trunk was lowered so that the enlarged tailgate also encompassed the part between the two now narrower rear lights. The tail lights, headlights and the grille have been adapted to the current style of Peugeot. In the interior, the dashboard and steering wheel have been modernized and made from higher quality materials.
From September 1991 the output of the 1360 cm³ was increased to 55 kW (75 HP), the XE / GE version was now called "Graffic".
In September 1992, with the introduction of standard catalytic converters, only vehicles with manifold injection were offered. With the GTI engine, that cost a bit of power. At the same time, the equipment levels were renamed. The basic version (previously XL / GL) was now called Vital, the XR / GR were now called GRX.
In June 1993 the range of models was drastically reduced, only the basic version Vital was still available until December 1993.
A total of 1,635,132 vehicles were produced. The successor was the Peugeot 306 . To this day there are still a few examples in Germany, mostly from the second series. First series vehicles have become very rare.

Naming
Even today, the number "309" does not really fit into the Peugeot nomenclature.
The problem arose through the subsequent incorporation of the model into the product range. At that time the designation 305 and 405 were already taken. The model could no longer be named 205 either and they did not want to anticipate the name of the following generations and name the vehicle 306. Ultimately, the decision was made for 309. The “9” at the end was probably chosen because it was assumed that the numbering system had been further developed by the time you reached 9. In the meantime, the system is handled in such a way that the nomenclature ends with “8” and the “1” is used in various cheaper models.
