The Peugeot 406 is a mid-range car from the French automaker Peugeot .

He succeeded the Peugeot 405 in autumn 1995 . It was available as a limousine, station wagon and coupé.

history

The 406 came on the market in October 1995 only as a four-door notchback sedan. Paul Bracq was responsible for the interior design . The station wagon called Break was introduced in October 1996, followed by the Coupé designed and produced by Pininfarina in April 1997 .

The engine started with a displacement of 1.6 liters with 65 kW (88 PS). There was also a 1.8 liter 81 kW (110 hp) and a 2.0 l petrol engine 97 kW (132 hp) up to a 3.0 l V6 engine with an output of 140 kW (190 PS). On the diesel side, there were the well-known PSA engines, initially with pre-chamber and from 1999 on with common rail injection (HDi). The latter was also optionally available with a particle filter .

The petrol engines are considered to run very smoothly, even if the smaller versions are not always classified as particularly powerful. The chassis was comfortably tuned for this.

The standard equipment was more extensive compared to the German sedans . ABS and double airbags were part of the standard equipment as early as 1996.

Facelift

In March 1999 the sedan and station wagon were given a major facelift. With some engines, the output increased (e.g. the 3.0-liter V6 from 140 kW / 190 PS to 152 kW / 207 PS) and a new 2.2-liter 16V petrol engine with 116 kW ( 158 hp) came into the program. In mid-2001, the 2.0 HPi was followed by a direct-injection petrol engine with an output of 103 kW (140 PS).

Outwardly, the more aggressively designed front of both body versions was noticeable. While the rear of the station wagon remained untouched, the limousine was given cross struts in the taillights painted in body color. The side indicator got a place in the upper area of the front fender. The all-round chrome trim strip in the bumper, which was previously only reserved for models with high equipment, became standard.

The coupé only received a slight visual upgrade in June 2001 with clear glass headlights. Some of the more powerful units followed for the facelift of the sedan and the Break , but at the same time as the facelift of the coupé, two more modern diesel engines with direct injection appeared (a 2.0 HDi with 79 kW / 107 hp and a 2.2 HDi with 98 kW / 133 hp).

Even before the sedan and station wagon were replaced by the Peugeot 407 , the coupé was revised again in June 2003, although these modifications were more profound than in the summer of 2001. The large radiator grille, which presented the future design line of the Peugeot brand, was particularly striking.

The 406 Coupé with the Ultima Edizione equipment remained the last version in the range until May 2005.

In Germany, however, the 406 could only hold its own badly against the major competition in the mid-range car segment from Wolfsburg ( Passat ) and Rüsselsheim ( Vectra ). However, the 406 Break has a lot of storage space with up to 1741 liters.

The 406 became famous through the film Taxi , where it was converted into a super car by a crazy taxi driver. It is also interesting that the police were on patrol with 406 vehicles in Saarland.
