Paul Bracq
Paul Bracq (born December 13, 1933 in Bordeaux ) is one of the leading automobile designers as well as one of the leading artists on the subject of automobiles.
Career
From 1950 to 1953 Bracq graduated from the École Boulle for design in Paris . In 1953 he became a member of the professional association Chambre Syndicale de la Carrosserie and assistant to the designer Philippe Charbonneaux . His work for Citroën in the early 1950s led to a ten-year commitment as a designer at Daimler-Benz in Sindelfingen , which began in 1957. Here Bracq was entrusted with the design for the Mercedes-Benz 600 . He also created the design of the “Pagoda Roof” - 230 SL , the 250 S and the “Strich-Acht” .
After returning to France in 1967, Bracq worked for the Brissonneau & Lotz design office . During this time he was responsible for prototype designs such as a roadster based on the BMW 1600 ti and a coupé based on the Simca 1100 . He was also involved in the design of the TGV high-speed train .
In 1970, Bracq was appointed Design Director of BMW to succeed Wilhelm Hofmeister , where he was responsible for some of the most important automobiles of the period, including the top-of-the-range 7-series . His “turbo concept car”, the BMW Turbo X1 , developed in 1973, won the “Concept Car of the Year” award from the Swiss Automobile Review that year .
Paul Bracq started at Peugeot in 1974 . He was Chief of Interior Design for the models 305, 505, 205, 405, 106 , 406 and 206. A planned popemobile was not realized at Peugeot. At BMW he was followed by Claus Luthe .
Bracq has dedicated himself to painting since retirement. His artwork has been exhibited in art museums around the world. He is also active as a juror in some of the major automotive competitions such as the annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California .
