The Simca 1100 or Talbot-Simca 1100 was a passenger car made by the French car manufacturer Simca .

Model history

  • 1967: After three years of development, the Simca 1100 was presented to the public in May 1967. The 1100 was Simca's first front-wheel drive vehicle. The Simca Poissy engine with 1118 cm³ and 50 HP (37 kW) was used.
  • 1969: The 944 cm³ 5CV engine developed 44 HP , the variant with 1118 cm³ developed 50 HP. New: the 1100 Break and the three-door are included in the range.
  • 1970: The three-door Simca 1100 Special is presented. (1204 cm³ 75 HP machine and brake pressure booster)
  • 1972: The engine of the Special is enlarged to 1294 cm³.
  • 1973: The VF line ("commercial vehicle based on passenger cars") is introduced, initially in the form of the VF2 (city truck).
  • 1974: The VF1 model is delivered (Break, but without rear side windows). The 1100 TI is delivered and the 1100 LE and GLE with 944 cm³ and the 1100 ES with 1118 cm³ are presented.
  • 1975: First revision of the 1100 series with a new dashboard and improved ergonomics.
  • 1976: The Rancho is developed by Matra on the basis of the Simca 1100 VF2 .
  • 1977: The Matra-Simca Rancho leisure vehicle is presented in Geneva and goes on sale from summer.
  • 1978: The VF3 is delivered, a VF2 with a higher roof, revised interior and at a lower price. Due to the elimination of the Simca 1000 , the 1100 is now the entry-level model below the Simca Horizon . Towards the end of the year, PSA Peugeot Citroën will take over the activities of Chrysler Europe and thus Simca.
  • 1979: PSA revives the Talbot brand . All Simca 1100 models will be renamed to Talbot-Simca 1100 and the Matra-Simca Rancho to Talbot-Matra Rancho in the middle of the year.
  • 1981: Production of the 1100 sedan ceases at the end of the year. The Talbot Samba is then manufactured on the 1100 production line in Poissy .
  • 1983: At the end of the year production of the Rancho is stopped. At Matra, the plant is converted to manufacture the Renault Espace .
  • 1985: The last Talbot 1100 city truck rolled off the assembly line.

The original plan was to stop production of the 1100 as early as 1978 and replace it with the Simca Horizon . However, since production would have been partially maintained with the SUV forerunner Rancho and the 1100 city truck, it was decided to revise the 1100 in order to be able to offer an entry-level model as a replacement for the outdated Simca 1000 , as it was selling increasingly poorly.

In terms of automotive history, it is particularly interesting that the 1100 was one of the first vehicles with a transversely installed engine and front-wheel drive as well as a large tailgate and folding rear seat. Contrary to what is generally known, the 1100 was the prototype of the later so-called " Golf class ". While the VW Golf I appeared in 1974, the 1100 series was developed and sold as early as the mid-1960s.

Design studies and other unique pieces

In 1969, the fashion designer Pierre Cardin designed the Simca 1100 Cardin based on a three-door Simca 1100 GLS. It was a design study with a modified rear end and a futuristic interior on behalf of Simca , carried out by Chappe et Gessalin , which ultimately remained a one-off.
