The Simca-Fiat 11 CV (also Fiat 11 CV F ) is an upper middle class car that the French automobile manufacturer SAFAF produced under license from Fiat from 1934 .

The car, which was derived from the Fiat 518 Ardita , was tough competition for other French cars in this class, as it was available at a reasonable price despite the high manufacturing quality.

history

The engineers Nebbia , Fessia , Giacosa and Zerbi , among others, worked on the project to manufacture this high-quality car . In 1933 the model was presented in Italy .

Production of the car began at the beginning of June 1934 in the Levallois factory under the name Fiat 11 CV F (F for France). It received type approval on June 11, 1934. It was then marketed as the Simca-Fiat 11 CV .

Like the Fiat 518 Ardita, the Fiat 11 CV F had a four-speed gearbox. It was powered by a front-mounted Fiat engine of the type 118 ( four-cylinder in- line engine ) with 1944 cm³ displacement and an output of 45 hp (33 kW), later 54 hp (39 kW), at 3800 rpm. The car had drum brakes on all four wheels, which were hydraulically operated in a two-circuit system with two master brake cylinders. The left cylinder worked on the front wheels, the right one on the rear wheels. The handbrake was a band brake that worked on the cardan shaft. The top speed was 115 km / h.

From 1934 to 1937, 2,200 copies were made in France, but possibly more. Vehicle registers created by Simca clubs contain chassis numbers that indicate that more than 2,200 vehicles have been built.

The Simca-Fiat 11 CV was available as a four-door sedan with doors hinged against each other (the front on the A-pillars , the rear on the C-pillars ) or as a two-door convertible.

The Fiat 518 was replaced by the Fiat 2800 in Italy in 1938 , the Simca-Fiat 11 CV had no successor. The manufacturer instead focused on smaller vehicles like the Simca 8 .

comment

According to a journalist for "Vie Automobile", whose very flattering article was published on September 25, 1935, the Simca-Fiat 11 CV is a remarkably safe automobile; the directional stability [is] very good and its brakes allow easy control in absolutely every situation (...) One had the impression that he could handle even higher speeds in complete safety, since the average speed on the test drive, that of Pont de Suresnes (the Simca-Fiat factory) to Rambouillet and Versailles and back (172 km in total), was close to the maximum speed specified by the manufacturer. The engine does not vibrate at all and at no speed; it leaves the impression of a six-cylinder. Many six-cylinder engines could take an example from the four-cylinder Fiat. The chassis is excellent without being overly soft and ensures total comfort. With a gasoline consumption of only 8.63 l / 100 km and without oil and cooling water consumption, the Simca-Fiat 11 CV, unlike a number of its competitors, has shown that it is a remarkable car that confirms its undeniable superiority. It is a very, very big class car.
