The Matra-Simca Bagheera was a three-seater sports coupe made by the automobile manufacturer Matra Automobiles . It was developed jointly by Simca and Matra as the successor to the Matra 530 (therefore marketed as Matra-Simca ) and presented to the public at the 24-hour race in Le Mans on June 9, 1973. The flat sports coupé with three seats in a row, folding headlights and a mid-engine was equipped with the drive unit and front axle of the Simca 1100 TI . The load-bearing structure of the car continued to consist of a tubular frame with plastic paneling. The model was named after the panther Bagheera from Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book .
Since PSA Peugeot Citroën had bought up the European brands of the American Chrysler group in the summer of 1978, the model was sold on by the new owner as Talbot-Matra Bagheera from August 1979 .
In the summer of 1980, the Bagheera ran out of production after around 47,802 copies. The successor Talbot-Matra Murena was presented at the Paris Salon in September of the same year .
Processing defects
After the ADAC Motorwelt magazine awarded a Bagheera with the negative award of the silver lemon in May 1975 as a “new car with the worst defects ex works” and subsequently a “community of interests of the Bagheera victims”, various design and construction awards won Workmanship flaws in the model attracted the general public. Until the Simca 1307/1308 was voted “ European Car of the Year ” in the following year, this resulted in a significant loss of prestige and a drop in sales for Chrysler-Simcas in Germany, but there it had a lasting impact on the image of the Bagheera as the epitome of the “ Monday car ”.
Models
The construction time of the Bagheera is divided into two series: the first series ran until mid-1976 and the second was produced from autumn 1977. The Bagheera has been continuously developed and so there are countless differences in detail depending on the year of construction.
