In March 1967 the Matra 530 was presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show . The engineer Guédon designed the car with a central engine that was ideal for road holding. The space in the back seat limits the choice of engine, which must be as short as possible. The decision was made to the 1.7-liter V4 engine (type P5S) of 17 M Ford Taunus , of the four-speed manual transmission of the Ford 15 M was combined. The chassis made of welded sheet steel was completed with bolted body elements made of synthetic resin and fiberglass. In addition, the M530 had folding headlights with optical warning system and a removable Targa roof with roll bar.

The Matra 530 was delivered from 1968, and from April 1969 the Ford C3 engine with the gearbox of the Taunus 15 M RS was installed. The Matra 530 was initially manufactured in Creil ; however, came from the factory in Romorantin-Lanthenay on April 14, 1969 . From 1970 the Matra automobiles were sold through the Chrysler- Simca sales network. The type designation changed to Matra M530 LX.

After declining sales, Matra brought the simplified M 530 SX onto the market in October 1971 to appeal to younger customers. This was an economical version with a fixed roof and attached headlights. Just over a thousand copies were made in 18 months. In Germany in 1971 the car cost 11,690 DM. In today's currency and adjusted for inflation, this corresponds to 20,000 euros. As of July 1, 1993, 7 vehicles of the type Matra 530 Coupé and 31 Matra 530 Targa were registered with the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Germany .

In June 1973 the series was discontinued and replaced by the Matra-Simca Bagheera .
