The Peugeot 407 is a mid -range car from the 400 series from the French car manufacturer Peugeot . In April 2004 it succeeded the 406 series . The 407 shared the floor pan with the Citroën C5 and was manufactured in Rennes , Brittany . Distinctive features of this model were the relatively large air intake in the front section and the headlights that were pulled far back.
Model history
The mid-range vehicle 407 was clearly at the top of this market segment in France and had a considerable sales volume in Europe. The vehicle was on a total high technical standard (5 stars in the NCAP crash test , particle filter , Cornering Brake Control, optional turbo - diesel engines with over 200 hp ).
In addition, there was a coupé from December 2005 , which was not manufactured by Pininfarina in Turin like the predecessor series , but like the sedan in Rennes . The large Station Wagon, or SW for short , was particularly popular ; it was no longer called Break - as is usually the case with PSA - and appears sportier than the notchback. It could be ordered with a particularly large glass roof, which makes the interior appear brighter.
In December 2010 the production of sedans and station wagons was stopped. The successor was the Peugeot 508 I in January 2011 . The coupe rolled off the production line until December 2011, but was not given a successor model.

407 coupe
The coupé celebrated its official world premiere at the 61st IAA 2005 in Frankfurt am Main. The coupe was available on the German market from December 2005. With a length of 4.82 meters and a width of 1.87 meters, the dimensions have grown compared to those of the predecessor.
From July 2009, the 407 Coupé was only offered with two diesel engines as 2.0 l HDI FAP with 120 kW and 3.0 l Bi-Turbo HDI with an output of 177 kW. The coupé was also the last body variant of the 407 still available in the Peugeot model range.
In December 2011, production of the coupé was also stopped. There are currently 609 (KBA as of January 1, 2019) vehicles of this type registered in Germany.

Facelift
In the seven years of construction, the series received only minor visual changes, but major technical changes.
2006
In June 2006 the sedan and station wagon received a slight facelift.
This could only be recognized from the outside by the renewed radiator grille with chrome-plated horizontal struts and a new rim design. The highest equipment variant "Platinum" received bumper and side strips painted in the body color. With all other equipment variants, these strips remained unpainted until the next revision.
Two new diesel engines followed (a 2.2-liter engine with 125 kW and a 2.7-liter V6 biturbo with 150 kW).
2008
In September 2008 there was another revision of the 407 series. On the outside, this mainly included new rear lights with white indicators on the sedan and combi rear lights in a honeycomb design.
In the case of the sedan, it is still a modified rear bumper with the license plate moved further down. The station wagon also received a slightly modified rear apron. The reversing sensors were now no longer attached, but set flush in the rear bumpers. All equipment lines received the bumper and side strips painted in the body color.
The equipment was supplemented by an optimized automatic air conditioning, new telematics systems and a parking aid for the front.

The 3.0-liter V6 engine ES9A built into the 407 brought a noticeable increase in performance compared to the 3.0-liter engine used in the 406, which was achieved in particular through the following changes:
- variable valve control VVT through camshaft adjustment
- new exhaust system with active two-stage silencer (pneumatically controlled switchover flap)
- improves the noise behavior under normal operating conditions (flap closed)
- Increase in performance under stress (flap open)

- The diesel engines were all equipped with a FAP particle filter as standard.
The 163 hp diesel was combined as standard with an automatic in the 407 and 407 sw, which resulted in significantly higher fuel consumption.
The DW12BTED4 engine is equipped with a 3rd generation common rail injection system that delivers a maximum pressure of 1800 bar.
Overboost is a device that increases the boost pressure above the "normal" value for a short time during strong acceleration and thus enables the maximum engine torque to be increased.
The DV6TED4 engine is the PSA Group's first diesel engine with an electric throttle valve unit (heating of the intake air and recirculation of the exhaust gases).
Both the 1.6 HDi and the 2.0 HDi (136 hp) are equipped with:
- 2nd generation common rail injection system, delivers a maximum pressure of 1600 bar.
- Exhaust gas turbocharger with variable geometry and electronic control
- Intercooler
- 2nd generation particle filter
- Cylinder head with four-valve technology
The 2.7-liter V6 bi-turbo diesel was developed as a joint project with Ford . The unit has two turbochargers (one per cylinder bank) and was praised by the German trade press. It was also used in some Jaguar models and, since 2006, in the Peugeot 607 as well as in the Citroën C6 and C5. This engine was further developed into the 3.0 HDi, which replaced the 2.7 HDi from 2009 and was also used in the coupé variant of the 407.
The 2.0 HDi diesel was revised at the end of 2008 and now has an output of 103 kW instead of 100 kW, consumes an average of 5.7 instead of 5.9 liters and meets the Euro 5 emissions standard . For countries in which bioethanol is subsidized by the state, a 2.0-liter gasoline engine was also available, which can also be operated with E85 ethanol. With all HDi diesel engines, a ceran additive solution from a separate storage tank is added to the fuel to lower the regeneration temperature of the soot particle filter each time the fuel is refueled. From 2009 the 135 PS variant of the 2.0 HDi was only offered with a 6-speed automatic transmission, as the new 2.0 HDi was initially only available with a 6-speed manual transmission.

In the Euro NCAP crash test, the 407 received five out of five stars. The occupants of the 407 sedan and the SW are protected by up to nine airbags, depending on the equipment: driver airbag, front passenger airbag, a knee airbag for the driver, two continuous curtain airbags on the left and right for the heads, two side airbags at the front and optionally two side airbags at the rear.
successor
The Peugeot 508 I has been available in Germany as a four-door notchback sedan and as a five-door station wagon with the additional designation SW since March 2011 and replaced both the 407 and 607 as the successor model . A sedan and a station wagon are available as body variants; a new coupé within this model series is not planned for the time being.
In China, the Peugeot 408 is also offered, which is a notchback version of the 308 .
Registration numbers
Between 2004 and 2011, a total of 57,411 Peugeot 407s were newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. 2005 was the most successful sales year with 18,303 units.
