The automobile manufacturer Tofaş (from " T ürk O tomobil F abrikası A nonim Ş irket") was founded in 1968 by Vehbi Koç as a joint venture between Koç Holding and Fiat SpA . The two partners each hold over a third of the shares.

The foundation stone for the Tofaş factory in Bursa was laid on April 4, 1969, and it was inaugurated on February 12, 1971. The plant was originally designed for an annual production of 20,000 vehicles, the workforce initially numbered 1,000. In 2011 and 2012, around 300,000 and 250,000 vehicles were manufactured per year , with the capacity utilization fluctuating between 80% and 60% , of which two thirds were light commercial vehicles and 60% were exported.

Fiat license production

Right from the start, Tofaş manufactured cars for the Italian car manufacturer Fiat under license . The first model was a replica of the Fiat 124 , which was built as Tofaş Serçe until 1994. Later, the Fiat 131 was also produced under license as the Şahin (base model), Kartal (station wagon) and Doğan (luxury variant). A revised version of the Şahin was then produced in Ethiopia as Holland Car DOCC at Holland Car .

Loss of the Tofaş brand

Since the abandonment of the models based on the Fiat 131, around 2003, no models have been sold as Tofaş. For this purpose, Fiat Siena and Fiat Marea were manufactured and sold as such. The production of Fiat Palio and Fiat Albea ended in 2011, leaving Fiat Linea and Fiat Doblò .

Research and Development

In 1994, Tofaş established a research and development center which, around 2006, designed a vehicle for Fiat and PSA and later a new Fiat Doblò, which was also sold as Opel and Vauxhall . For General Motors it was a new generation of the combo . The other design went on sale as the Peugeot Bipper , Citroën Nemo and the new Fiat Fiorino . Both designs were named Van of the Year .

engagement

The company is involved in motorsport through Fiat Motorsports Turkey or the Tofaş Rally and supports projects in the field of promoting youth sports ( basketball , table tennis , volleyball ).

The factory has been certified according to ISO 14001 (environmental protection guidelines) since November 1998 and was able to obtain an extension of this certification in January 2002 . Tofaş was also sold to a small extent in Germany through a sales point in Frankfurt .
