The Fiat Marea (type 185) is a lower middle class vehicle based on the compact Bravo model of the Fiat brand , which was built from late summer 1996 to the end of 2002.
Model history
The introduction of the Marea began in autumn 1996 as a sedan and station wagon ("Weekend"). Engines from 75 to 154 hp were available.
Two 1.9-liter four-cylinder engines with 75 and 100 hp and, for the first time, a 2.4-l 5-cylinder engine with 124 hp (the two most powerful with electronically controlled pre-chamber injection) were offered as diesel engines. From model year 1999 onwards, in addition to the 1.9-liter 75 HP engine (until 2000), there was a new 1.9-liter common rail engine (JTD) with 105 HP and a 2.4-liter JTD with 130 hp to choose from. The 2.4-l JTD was in the range until the end of 2000, the 1.9-l JTD was increased to 110 hp from the end of 2000.
The five-cylinder engine, which was also available in a 2.0-liter petrol version, was particularly appealing because of the sonorous sound of the series of ignitions .
The Fiat Marea was offered in three equipment lines: SX, ELX and HLX, but the scope of equipment varies in detail depending on the country.
In the summer of 1999 the Marea was slightly revised, especially in the equipment variants and the interior (better plastics and panels).
Another facelift took place towards the end of 2000 when the new brand logo and revised engines were introduced. The weekend's rear lights were also revised.
To this day, the fold-down bumper below the tailgate of the weekend is still a fairly rare feature. A detail that was taken over from the Tempra Weekend.
The sedan was taken out of production in Europe in early 2002, while the weekend rolled off the assembly line until the end of 2002.
In Brazil it was produced until 2007 in the same version as in Europe, but with the taillights of the Lancia Lybra .

Group relationships
Fiat classified the Marea in the middle class, the vehicle is visibly similar to the Fiat Bravo and Brava ( compact class ) up to the B-pillar . But the similarities could not be overlooked under the sheet metal either, after all the Marea was based on the Bravo / Brava. The Marea received heavier bumpers and a wider track. This should make them appear larger.
The Fiat Multipla , a six-seater van with an unusual arrangement of the seats, is essentially based on the technology of the Bravo.
successor
The Fiat Marea Weekend was replaced by the Fiat Stilo Multiwagon in early 2003 . The Fiat Linea presented in the summer of 2007 is the indirect successor of the Marea sedan, as it uses the platform of the Fiat Grande Punto , which is part of the small car class .
Special versions
In some markets, the Marea Weekend was sold in a commercial vehicle version as a Fiat Marengo with a diesel engine and without a back seat.
Fiat traditionally built special versions of its models as convertibles for taxi traffic on the island of Capri . The sedan version of the Marea has been stretched 70 cm to make room for two rear seats (the front one can be folded away). Only the driver sits in a closed cabin. The four rear seats can be closed by a hood or shaded by an awning .
Production worldwide
The Marea was produced in a revised version and with more powerful engines (e.g. as a 2.0 20V Turbo) in Brazil until February 2008 .
Until the end of 2007 the Turkish brand Tofaş built the vehicle under license, u. a. in a higher quality version with leather interior and sound system.
