The Uno is a small car from Fiat that came onto the market in spring 1983 as the successor to the Fiat 127 .

Production in Italy ran until autumn 1995, with most versions being replaced by the successor Fiat Punto in autumn 1993 . The Fiat Duna , Fiat Prêmio with notchback and the Kombi Weekend, similar to the Uno, were not available in German-speaking countries . The station wagon version was also sold as Innocenti Elba in some markets . The van derived from the Duna was called the Fiat Fiorino .

Some of the vehicles were manufactured by Zastava in Yugoslavia and offered there under this brand.

In Brazil , the second series was continued under the name Fiat Mille until 2014 after the end of European production .

As Fiat Novo Uno (Portuguese) or Nuevo Uno (Spanish), each for New Uno , a technically related successor model to the Fiat Panda (type 169) has been produced in South America since spring 2010 , while the Uno in South America, mostly as the Fiat Mille referred to, was only the cheapest Fiat model. Production was then stopped at the end of 2013. It was not until 2016 that Fiat presented a successor to the Mille, the Fiat Mobi .

Model history

General

Rear view

The Fiat Uno Type 146 was built from March 1983 to October 1995 in the Italian Fiat factories Mirafiori and Rivalta di Torino . The body was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro . In other countries it was produced longer; in Brazil it rolled off the production line in 2014 as “Mille”. The Uno won a total of eleven international awards and was sold worldwide in various versions (Uno, Duna, Penny, Fiorino, Premio, Elba and Mille). In the 1980s, together with the Peugeot 205, it was one of the best-selling imported cars in Germany. It was the best-selling car in Europe for years.

The Fiat Uno was the first vehicle to be designed for largely automated production with robots. 200 robots took care of the automatic welding, another 20 took over the painting. The body consists of only 172 individual parts that are connected with only 2700 welding points, of which only 30 have to be set manually. The production facilities were planned so flexibly that other models could also be manufactured on the same line at the same time, in order to be able to react to the development of demand.

The design of the first Fiat Uno was described as exemplary by Otl Aicher in his book Critique of the Auto (1984).

Equipment variants

Basic model (no name): Simple equipment and yellow flashing lights in front. S : Extended equipment, with white flashing lights at the front. SX : Elegant version with more powerful engines, better seat covers, rev counter or, for example, central locking. Turbo : Sporty version with supercharged gasoline engine, wide tires, light alloy wheels, sports seats and fog lights.

There was also a large number of special models depending on the year of construction and the market.

technology

body

The vehicle with a self-supporting steel body was available with three or five doors. The drag coefficient (C w ) was 0.34 (improved to 0.30 in the 1989 facelift). The roof only extends to the inner edge of the side parts, the welding flanges are covered with black plastic strips and there are no rain gutters. The windscreen has a single-arm wiper and the three-door models only have finger recesses for the door opener instead of door handles. The plastic bumpers can cope with parking bumps up to 5 km / h without damage. The versions Uno Turbo, SX and some special models are equipped with remote unlocking of the tailgate next to the driver's seat. The Uno Turbo (first series) has a tailgate with an integrated plastic spoiler lip. The Uno was converted into a convertible (with B-pillar) in small series by the L&H Automobile company in Frankfurt. In addition, there was the "Van" model for commercial use for some foreign markets, in which the rear side windows were covered with a film, the rear seat was missing and a protective grille for the driver's area was installed. A second level in the hold was available at an additional cost.

The second, extensively modernized series appeared in 1989. The bonnet and tailgate were now made of sheet metal galvanized on both sides , the front edge of the bonnet was rounded, the grille and headlights were flatter, which reduced air resistance. The tailgate was characteristically arched, which expanded the trunk a little. This style element was introduced in the Fiat Tipo a year earlier . The radiator grille, now painted in body color, was also based on this model.

Engines

First there was the Uno with engines that were already known from other Fiat models: the construction of the 33 kW engine with an underneath camshaft and three crankshaft bearings dates back to the 1950s and this version had already been used in the Fiat 127, the 40th -kW engine came from the Fiat 128 from 1969. From 1985 there were the newly designed FIRE engines (Fully Integrated Robotized Engine). They were designed so that robots could build them.

transmission

In the first model series up to 1989, the Uno 45 only had a four-speed gearbox (except for ES or 45 Super and 45 i. E.). All other models were equipped with a five-speed gearbox. From 02/1991 there was also a model with automatic transmission , the Uno Selecta with 1.5 liter engine (1498 cm³, 55 kW / 75 PS) and continuously variable V-belt automatic (CVT).

landing gear

The Uno has rack and pinion steering and independent wheel suspension all around: front struts and wishbones made of sheet steel, at the rear a torsion beam axle with coil springs. All Uno models have gas pressure shock absorbers as standard . The wheels run parallel on both axles (no toe-in ) - this reduces rolling resistance and tire wear.

Brakes

All Uno models have floating calipers - disc brakes . At the rear, all except the Uno Turbo are equipped with drum brakes and a load-dependent brake force regulator . In the beginning there was no brake booster on the Uno 45 . The anti-skid braking system ( ABS ) was available as an option for the Uno Turbo from October 1988.

bikes

All models (except Turbo and some special models) were equipped with sheet steel wheels measuring 4.50 B × 13. Only the Turbo had light alloy wheels size 5.5J × 13 as standard. The smaller models used 135 SR 13, the larger (from 55 Super) 155/70 SR 13 and the Turbo 175/60 HR 13. From 09/1989 all models (except Turbo) were fitted with 155/70 R 13 tires.

Argentina 1989-2000 Fiat Premio, Fiat Elba (station wagons), Fiat Penny (panel van) A sedan based on the UNO of the Fiat Duna has been produced by Sevel Argentina in the Córdoba (Argentina) plant since 1985 . In Argentina and Brazil, however, this model was called Fiat Premio . From 1989 the three-door Fiat Uno for South America was added. The engines available were petrol engines with 1.0 liter and 38 kW (52 hp) to 1.6 liter and 64 kW (87 hp) and a 1.3 liter diesel engine with 33 kW (45 hp). In 1995 the production of the Duna / Premio station wagon ( Fiat Elba in Argentina and Brazil ) and the Fiat Penny van based on the station wagon were relocated from Brazil to Argentina. Production of the model series ended in 2000. While the successor models Fiat Palio and Fiat Siena were being built in Argentina , production of the Uno moved to Brazil after 179,767 units were built.
Philippines 1992-2002 In the Philippines, Fiat concluded a joint venture called Italcar Pilipinas Inc. with the local manufacturer Francisco Motors in 1990. As part of the people's car program of the President of the Philippines Corazon Aquino , the Fiat Uno was to be produced locally from 1992 to 2000. However, this was not a great success for Fiat, as the UN was not very popular and production figures fell steadily until the end of the contract in 2000.
South Africa 1990-2013 In South Africa, Nissan produced the Uno under license from 1990 to 1998. After Fiat returned to the South African market in 1998, Nissan built the Uno for Fiat. Strangely enough, the word under license was under the trademark on the rear, since UN customers were known as Nissan. In 2006, a revised model was introduced, which now came from production in Brazil and was marketed entirely by Fiat. When production in Brazil was discontinued, sales in South Africa also ended.
Poland 1995-2002 Production at the Fiat plant in Poland ran from 1995 to 2002, producing 173,382 UN units. The Uno was available with an airbag and many other innovations.
India 1996-1998 After an assembly with local Indian partners from delivered parts kits (CKD: Completely Knocked Down ) failed in 1996 - only 617 cars were built instead of the 30,000 agreed, Fiat signed a contract with Tata Motors for a limited-time collaboration. In 1997, Tata Motors was to assemble the parts kits that had already been supplied with 600 employees at its Ranjangaon plant in Pune's Maharashtra district, and if there was enough demand, it would set up its own production facility for the UN. While the UN enjoyed great popularity when it was launched, delayed delivery and decreasing interest from dealers led to a decline in orders. Some of the Unos assembled by Tata in 1997 were sold until 1998 and then the model was taken off the market.
Pakistan 2001-2004 2001 began a CKD production of the Uno by Raja Motor Co., Ltd. The only engine available was a 1.7 liter diesel engine. In 2004, production and sales ended due to the company's bankruptcy .
Morocco 1995-2003 SOMACA produced the UN from 1995 to 2003.
Brazil 1993-2013 UN 1993–2004 / Mille 2005–2013 The Brazilian version built from 1993 had the body of the Uno MK II, but the interior of the MK I. In the Brazilian models, the front of the vehicle in particular was changed. As with the Fiorino , the bonnet was a little higher, with the spare wheel underneath. The rear of the vehicle corresponded to that of the Uno MK 1, except for the rear axle with transverse leaf springs and shock absorber struts, which came from the Fiat 147. In Brazil, an engine with a displacement of 1580 cm³ and 92 hp was also offered from 1993 , and from 1994 a Uno Turbo 1.4 (1372 cm³ displacement) with 118 hp. In addition to the five-door variant of the Uno, the technically and externally similar Fiat Fiorino and the Uno Furgao panel van have been produced in Brazil since 1977 . As is usual in Brazil, the Uno was also available in an ethanol version.

Equipment variants:

  • Uno Mille Clip 1.0 i. e. (994 cm³, 35 kW / 48 PS) ** Uno Mille 1.3 CS, S, SX (1297 cm³, 43 kW / 58 PS)
  • Uno Mille 1.3 Fire Flex (1242 cm³, 51 kW / 70 PS and 52 kW / 71 PS with ethanol operation)
  • Uno Mille Clip 1.4 i. e. (1372 cm³, 51 kW / 69 PS)
  • Uno Mille Clip 1.7 D (1697 cm³, 42 kW / 57 PS)

Since 1990 there has been an economy version of the Uno called Uno Mille with a 1.0-liter petrol engine with 32 kW (44 PS). In 2000, with the cessation of production of the three-door UN in Argentina and relocation to Brazil, the engine now had 35 kW (48 hp). As of 2005, the term UN was dropped in Brazil. The Uno, now only known as Fiat Mille , received a revision with a new dashboard. Only the 1.0 liter petrol engine with 35 kW (48 hp), optionally also with ethanol operation, was available. The Mille Furgao and the Fiorino only have a 1.3 Fire Flex engine.

After the introduction of the Fiat Novo Uno , the Mille was the cheapest Fiat in Brazil. The original plan was to replace the Mille with a version of the Fiat Palio with reduced equipment . However, new models such as the Chevrolet Onix and the Hyundai HB 20 showed that the Fiat Palio itself had to be replaced by a new model. At the same time, models like the VW up! or the Renault Kwid below the Novo Uno, which made Fiat fear that Fiat would lose market share here. That is why Fiat decided to redevelop the Novo Uno before production of the Mille ended. In December 2013 the production of the Mille, Mille Furgao and Fiorino was stopped. The Furgao, like the Fiat Fiorino Furgao, has been produced on the basis of the Novo Uno since 2013 . The Fiat Mobi has replaced the Fiat Mille since 2016 .
