In autumn 1961, the Fiat 2300 appeared as an almost identical successor to the Fiat 2100 . Like this one, it was available as a four-door notchback sedan and as a five-door station wagon (Familiare) and the top model in the model range above the Fiat 1800 .
history
The Fiat 2300 had an in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine with a displacement of 2279 cm³ with a four-bearing crankshaft and overhead valves. It developed a maximum of 77 kW (105 hp) at 5300 rpm and powered the rear wheels via a hydraulically operated single-disc dry clutch , a synchronized four-speed gearbox with steering wheel gearshift and a split cardan shaft .
An overdrive or a three-stage automatic transmission was also available as an option. The rear axle now hung on semi-elliptical leaf springs and no longer on spring links with coil springs as in the 1900 and 1800/2100. The top speed was 154 to 162 km / h, depending on the version. Like the 2100 Speciale , the 2300 was equipped with twin headlights.
The 2300 Speciale was offered with a 80 mm larger wheelbase, a correspondingly longer body and better equipment .
Coupe
The two-door Fiat 2300 Coupé designed by Ghia , which was also equipped with the 2.3-liter engine, appeared at the same time as the sedan and station wagon . Its top speed was 175 km / h. The coupe was built with a four-speed gearbox with center shift, but was discontinued in mid-1964.
At the same time, there was the almost 200 km / h 2300 S Coupé with an engine that had been redesigned by Abarth and developed over 136 hp (100 kW).
Ghia built the Ghia 230 S based on the Fiat 2300 .
successor
At the beginning of 1968 the production of all 2300 variants was stopped. In spring 1969, the newly designed successor Fiat 130 appeared for the 2300 Berlina with a new six-cylinder V-engine and independent rear suspension. A FIAT 130 estate version Familiare was not built despite a prototype shown in 1971, and the successor to the 2300 S Coupé is the Dino 2000 Coupé with 160 hp, built from the end of 1967.
