The Fiat 126 BIS is a variant of the Fiat 126 presented in the summer of 1972 . The external characteristic of the BIS is the larger rear window compared to its predecessors and the tailgate in which it is located and the lack of ventilation slots at the rear.

In addition, the instrument panel differs from most previous models of the Fiat 126. In contrast to the first series of the Fiat 126 (and probably some of the second series) the Fiat 126 BIS has neither chrome bumpers nor metal hubcaps, but plastic parts.

The Fiat 126 BIS was produced from autumn 1987 to mid-1991 - that is, only about four years. The production took place under license from the company FSM in Poland.

technical changes

Firstly, unlike previous Fiat 126 models, the 126 BIS is the first to have a water-cooled engine. The modified engine concept resulted in a Fiat 126 with a real trunk in the rear for the first time.

The tires for summer and winter tires were limited to 135/70 R13. With the previous Fiat 126, this dimension was an option to a dimension based on R12.

A rack and pinion steering was installed as the first 126 in this model. This steering is more direct than the previous concepts and contributes to driving comfort.

Technical specifications

The 126 BIS is like its predecessor a four-seat sedan. These four people shouldn't be too big, though. The 126 BIS has nothing in common with today's definition of a four-seater .

The top speed is 116 km / h. This means that it is slightly higher than the previous models - also because of the changed tire dimensions.

The 126 BIS has rear-wheel drive, which is certainly a guarantee of driving pleasure and is typical of all 126 and Nuova 500 . This structural circumstance results from the very compact format of the BIS , in which the driver and front passenger sit very far in front compared to other small cars.

The braking system is a dual-circuit braking system with drum brakes on both axles. The only difference between the brakes on both axles is the braking force of the wheel brake cylinders. The pads are identical for both axles. In principle, it can be converted to disc brakes . However, this effort is only worthwhile when using non-standard motors with increased power.

The nominal consumption in urban areas is 5.8 and at a constant 90 km / h 4.4 liters per 100 km. Both figures are realistic estimates, but these consumption values vary depending on the time of year or outside temperature and the condition of the engine.

The height is 1343 mm, the width 1377 mm, the length 3107 mm. The track width is 1142 mm at the front and 1203 mm at the rear. Certainly a good city car. Finding a parking space is easy with the small dimensions. Due to the small wheelbase and the narrow track, this car is very manoeuvrable. The turning circle is given as 8 m.

The ready-to-drive curb weight is 620 kg, the maximum permissible total weight is 965 kg. These are made up of the empty weight, four people and 65 kg of luggage.

The Fiat 126 BIS has a partially synchronized four-speed gearbox ; the 1st and the reverse gear are unsynchronized. The gearbox has a longer gear ratio than that of the previous Fiat 126 and Fiat Nuova 500 models. The reverse gear is straight-toothed, the gears 1–4 are helical-toothed.

The front wheel suspension is based on a leaf spring that is transverse to the vehicle axle and connects the two front wheels.

The motor

One of the three ignition contact variants

The engine develops 26 hp from 704 cm³ and two cylinders, is water-cooled and was used in its original form in the Fiat Nuova 500 Giardiniera. The maximum power is achieved at approx. 4500 rpm, the highest engine torque of 47 Nm at 2000 rpm.

The design is a co-rotating twin engine with horizontal cylinders (cylinder head on the right side). Both cylinders are ignited at the same time. At the time of ignition, one of the two cylinders is just before the power stroke, the other just before the intake stroke. This means that one spark plug ignites normally into the mixture, while the other ignites into the exhaust gas that acts as an electrolyte . This ignition is realized with a double ignition coil with only one ignition contact . So no distributor is necessary. The ignition contact is set to 10 ° before TDC (top dead center), plus centrifugal adjustment. This concept also distinguishes the Fiat 126 BIS from its predecessors.

Nicknames

For the Fiat 126 BIS several nicknames are used, here are the most common: elephant skate , bubble car , water buffalo , Wasserpanscher , kettle , Maluch or covered spark plug .

Most of the nicknames go back to the novelty of water cooling.
