The Fiat Coupé , which was marketed at the factory under the name Coupé Fiat , is a compact sports car from the Italian automobile manufacturer Fiat . The internal model designation of the vehicle built from January 1994 to December 2000 is Tipo 175 ; during the development phase the car was also called coffango . Technically, the coupé is based on the compact sedan Fiat Tipo . Due to its design, the car is one of the coveted youngtimers.

The top model, the Fiat Coupé 20V Turbo, was the fastest production car with front-wheel drive when it was launched with a top speed of 250 km / h. To date (2019) it is the fastest model that Fiat has mass-produced.

History of origin

One of the special features of the Fiat Coupé is the polarizing design of its body. It was created in Fiat's own Centro Stile , which prevailed in a competition against Pininfarina . The Peugeot 406 Coupé was later developed from Pininfarina's design . The Centro-Stile design was the responsibility of Chris Bangle , who, according to his own account, combined the Italian design language of the 1980s with stylistic elements from American sports cars. According to Bangle, the front end pays homage to the Ford GT40 , while the free-standing fuel filler cap is said to quote a Dodge Charger from 1968. The round taillights are classic features of Italian sports cars. The steeply sloping ridge stern was a specification of the company management and followed aerodynamic aspects. The movable spoilers favored by Bangle, however, were not taken over into series production for reasons of cost. The design of the interior, which contains an instrument panel painted in body color, was a work by Pininfarina.

The 4.25 m long car has two seats in the front and two seats in the rear, which are not suitable for tall people.

production

The Fiat coupe was manufactured by Pininfarina. The car, together with the open- top Barchetta built from spring 1995 to mid-2005, was intended to give Fiat a sportier image and tie in with the brand's coupé history. A total of 72,762 units of the Fiat coupe were built. The year with the highest production was 1994 when 17,600 vehicles were produced. After that, production decreased continuously. From 1998 only four-digit production numbers were achieved.

In Germany as well as in other countries, the car could not achieve high sales figures. The modifications made to the interior of the car in 1998 could not change this either.
