The Fiat Toro is a pick-up model that has been produced by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) at the Goiana ( Pernambuco ) plant in Brazil for the South American market since 2015 . Fiat advertises the model as a Sport Utility Pick-Up (SUP) because of the cross between SUV and pick-up. The concept was officially presented at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in 2014 , production began on October 14, 2015 and the first official images were published in November 2015. Sales began in early 2016. Fiat plans to later offer the model as Rampage in North America under the truck division Ram Trucks . In South and Central America, however, the model is represented as the Ram 1000 in the model range.
Model history
Pickup models have always been very popular in South America, but not in the size of a Ford F , but rather in the small or medium class. Fiat is not represented in the middle segment, in which the Toyota Hilux , the Ford Ranger , the Nissan Frontier and the Chevrolet S10 are among the best-selling vehicles in South America . The Mitsubishi L200 built in Thailand has also been marketed as a Fiat Fullback in Europe, Asia and the Middle East since 2016 , but not in America because Mitsubishi Motors does not allow that. By 2018 at the latest, FCA would also like to compete here with a pick-up based on the Jeep Wrangler .
As a small pickup, Fiat builds the Fiat Strada, which is also available in Europe, and competes in South America against the Chevrolet Montana and the VW Saveiro . All are based on small cars. The great success of the Renault Duster Oroch , which lies between the small and medium-sized pickup trucks, prompted FCA to create a competing offer with the development code 226. Just like the Duster Oroch, the Toro is not so much a pick-up, but rather an SUV that can also be used as a pick-up. There is only one closed double cabin with four doors and a loading area, which in turn is not closed with a tailgate hinged at the bottom, but with two doors hinged on the side. However, the Toro is slightly larger and also available with more power than the Duster Oroch.
The Goiana plant in Brazil was chosen as the production site - also because the platform for the Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X built there serves as the basis.
