The Fiat 242 is a small van from Fiat in Italy , which was developed together with the Citroën C35 and built by Società Europea Veicoli Leggeri Sevel in Italy from autumn 1975 to mid-1987 as a panel van , flatbed truck with single and double cabins, mobile homes and chassis .
It replaced the Fiat 241 and was particularly popular in its home country due to its robustness and reliability. The front-wheel drive and the individually suspended wheels enabled a low loading height. It already had four disc brakes . The Fiat 242 was not offered in France and vice versa the Citroën C35 was not offered in Italy. The successor to the Fiat Ducato in the maxi version , which was introduced in January 1982 .
When it was introduced in October 1975, it was available with a 2.0-liter petrol engine from Fiat or a 2.2-liter diesel engine from the Citroën CX . It was available from the factory as a panel van, chassis for superstructures, small buses and minibuses.
At the beginning of 1980 the model was revised. A 2.5-liter diesel engine replaced the 2.2-liter, the indicators were placed next to the headlights, reversing lights were available and side guard rails. At the end of 1984 the 242 received a new dashboard.
Production ended in the summer of 1987 after more than 500,000 units.
