The Fiat Turbina was built in 1954 to test the use of gas turbines in vehicle construction.
history
In the late 1940s, Dante Giacosa , the technical director of Fiat's automotive division, began considering a gas turbine drive for road vehicles. The highly developed piston engines used in aviation were quickly replaced by the new jet engines and propeller turbines - which at that time suggested a corresponding development in vehicle construction.
Although the widespread industrial group Fiat already had experience both with small jet engines - the de Havilland Ghost jet turbine was built under license by the aviation division Fiat Aviazione - and in large turbine construction, Giacosa developed its vehicle turbine from scratch with its designers Oscar Montabone and Vittorio Bellicardi.
The original Turbina is exhibited in the Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile in Turin ; the engine is shown in the Centro Storico Fiat .
technology
drive
A centrally installed two-stage gas turbine with three combustion chambers and two-stage compressor, which was operated with kerosene, served as the drive. It developed 300 hp (221 kW) at 22,000 rpm. That was enough for a top speed of 250 km / h.
body
The body was designed as a two-door coupé with rear-hinged doors, two tail fins and spoked wheels. The rear wheels could be disguised if necessary. The tanks, each with a capacity of 60 liters, were arranged in the sills below the door cutouts.
landing gear
The wheel suspensions corresponded to the design of the Fiat 8V racing car . On the wire spokes wheels of Borrani were Pirelli tires mounted type "Stelvio Corsa" of dimension 6:00 x 16 ".
