history

The Biscaretti Museum until 2011

The museum in 2006

Carlo Biscaretti di Ruffia founded the Biscaretti Museum in 1932 at the suggestion of his father Roberto Biscaretti di Ruffia and Cesare Goria Gatti - both pioneers of the Italian automotive industry. He collected the basis of today's collection and kept looking for the right location for the presentation.

In 1956, the ANFIA (Associazione Nazionale fra Industrie Automobilistiche ed Affini), together with the Agnelli family, in agreement with the Turin City Collection, decided to build a new building on Unità d'Italia street. With the signing of the official document on February 22, 1957, the way was clear for the planning of the museum on the left bank of the river Po near the FIAT plant in Lingotto . The modern construction began in April 1958 according to plans by the architect Amedeo Albertini and was completed by autumn 1960.

Carlo Biscaretti had been appointed president of the museum, but he died shortly after his seventieth birthday a year before it was finished. The board of directors of the museum then named the museum after him.

The opening of the Museo dell'Automobile "Carlo Biscaretti di Ruffia" took place on November 3, 1960.

The MAUTO museum since 2011

In 2002 the directors began to consider the realignment and redesign of the museum, which in 2005 finally resulted in an international architectural competition with 50 participating companies. The winners were a group led by the architect Cino Zucchi , Recchi Engineering Srl and Proger SpA .

The exhibitions were designed by the film set designer François Confino , who had already designed the Museo nazionale del cinema in Turin. The city of Turin , the province of Piedmont and the Italian Automobile Club ( ACI ) shared the costs of 33 million euros .

On the 150th birthday of the Republic of Italy in March 2011, the newly designed museum opened after almost four years of renovation work that began on April 10, 2007.

Benedetto Camerana , who was confirmed as president of the museum for another three years in 2015, also designed the reopened Museo storico Alfa Romeo in Arese.
