In spring 1996 the Palio came onto the market as a three- or five-door hatchback in various countries. Due to its rather spartan equipment, the Palio was primarily intended as a cost-effective commercial vehicle, as it was also used in Europe.

In Germany, only the five-door station wagon was sold as the Palio Weekend from summer 1998 to mid-2003 . Its competitors have included the Kia Rio , the Lada 2111 and the estate version of Skoda Felicia / Fabia I .

The points of criticism included the poor workmanship, a relatively small interior and poor performance of the 54 kW version (73 hp ).

The four-door notchback version is called Fiat Siena , and the pickup version is sold as Fiat Strada . Later a 51 kW turbo diesel (70 TD), a 74 (later: 76) kW gasoline engine, a 44 kW gasoline engine and a 1.9 suction diesel with 46 kW were offered.

The Palio was given a facelift in early 2001 and mid-2003 . In Turkey, the notchback version was not called Siena, but Fiat Albea .

From 2004 it was also offered with the so-called Flex engine (for Flexible Fuel Vehicle ), which could be operated not only with gasoline but also with environmentally friendly alcohols ( methanol , ethanol ).

In mid-2006, the series received another facelift.

For the Indian market, the Palio will also be offered in a natural gas (CNG) version from 2009 .
