The Fiat Punto is a small car from Fiat . The third generation was produced from 2005 to 2018.

Model history

Grande Punto (2005-2009)

In the late summer of 2005, the Grande Punto was initially launched as a three-door model, followed by the five-door model in mid-November 2005.

The third model generation is around 20 cm longer and around 2 cm wider than the previous model (hence the “Grande”). Progress has also been made in terms of build quality. With five stars in the Euro NCAP test, the new Punto was one of the safest in its class.

The Grande Punto was the best-selling car in Western Europe in the first quarter of 2006, a result not matched by any Italian model in almost a decade. The sales success of the Grande Punto was important for the financial development of the Fiat group.

Equipment variants in Germany

Seven equipment lines were offered in Germany: Go, Active, Dynamic, Linea Sportiva Speed, Linea Sportive Racing, Linea Sportiva Sport and Emotion:

  • Active: electric front windows, driver and front passenger airbags
  • Dynamic: in addition to the "Active" equipment: side airbags at the front, asymmetrically foldable rear bench seat, height-adjustable driver's seat, radio remote control for central locking, manual air conditioning
  • Emotion: in addition to the “Dynamic” equipment: head airbags at the front and rear, ESP with brake assist and hill holder, fog lights , two-zone automatic air conditioning , Blaupunkt RDS car radio with CD player and six loudspeakers, radio controls on the steering wheel
  • Sport: in addition to the "Emotion" equipment (without two-zone air conditioning): ESP with brake assistant and hill start aid, rear spoiler and side skirts, four seats (five seats for the five-door) in a sporty design, sports suspension, car radio with CD and MP3 Player and six speakers

In Austria, the Gran Luce equipment line was also available, which featured a panoramic glass roof and automatic air conditioning, and the sporty Linea Sportiva with u. a. Sports suspension and alloy wheels.

Additional extras were available for a surcharge, such as the "Blue + Me" wireless intercom system developed together with Microsoft , the comfort package with center armrest and electric lumbar support, the Interscope HiFi system developed together with an American company, tinted windows, two-zone automatic air conditioning and much more. A particle filter is available for all diesel engines at an additional cost .

The Opel Corsa D and the “Grande Punto” share the Punto3-ZFA199 platform , which was developed together with Fiat. Therefore, around 30% of the parts and technical components are the same.

In May 2008 the Abarth Grande Punto with a 1.4-liter jet engine (with turbocharger) with 114 kW (155 PS) or 132 kW (179 PS) expanded the model range as a Supersport. The "esseesse" performance kit is also available for the Abarth Grande Punto 114 kW (155 PS), increasing the engine output to 132 kW (179 PS). These Abarth models are intended to compete with the VW Polo GTI and Polo GTI Cup Edition with a particularly sporty appearance and other equipment .

Fiat also started with the Grande Punto S2000 Abarth factory in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge , which was won in 2006 with driver Giandomenico Basso .

Punto Evo (2009-2011)

From October 24, 2009, the Punto Evo was sold as a three- and five-door model. In addition to external changes, the new version had, among other things, new so-called MultiAir engines, which could be ordered from January 2010. The Abarth version followed in mid-2010, now with 120 kW (163 hp). Since the beginning of January 2011, the vehicle has been simply called Punto again.

Fiat Punto Evo three-door (2009-2011)

The drive system and equipment showed some changes compared to the predecessor Grande Punto. In addition to the “MultiAir” engine technology, this also included safety equipment with seven airbags as standard, including knee airbags, and the electronic stability program ESP with hill start assist .

Safety
With five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test, it was one of the safest representatives in its class. Six airbags were standard from the Dynamic version, namely driver and front passenger airbags, two head airbags and two side airbags at the front; the knee airbag for the driver is optional. In addition, the Punto Evo was equipped with an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution (EBD), electronic stability program (ESP) with traction control (ASR) and hill start assist .

Environmental protection
With the Fiat Punto Evo with the Multiair engines (petrol), CO 2 exhaust gases and pollutant emissions were reduced compared to conventional engines. These met the Euro 5 emissions standard .

Automatic start-stop system
All turbodiesel engines and Euro 5 petrol engines were equipped with an automatic start-stop system as standard . This system automatically turns the engine off when you put the engine in neutral and release the clutch, and on again when the clutch pedal is depressed and engaged.

Eco: DriveTM
The eco: DriveTM application program provides real-time information on driving style and makes suggestions on how to drive more environmentally friendly in the current driving situation and at the same time optimize fuel consumption through optimized shifting, acceleration and braking - an energy-saving driving style . This system already existed in the previous model.

Body design
Compared to the Fiat Grande Punto, the body of the Fiat Punto Evo was redesigned by the designers of the Centro Stile Fiat in the area of plastic parts. Features were the strikingly carved out vehicle front, which was determined by characteristic headlights with integrated daytime running lights , and the striking design of the rear. The redesigned bumper offers additional safety in traffic. According to Fiat, decorative strips on the side emphasized the dynamic lines. At the rear, L-shaped rear lights set accents.

Interior
Like the body, the interior of the Fiat Punto Evo has also been completely redesigned. The center console has been divided into two areas: the upper segment contains the module for the audio system including a centrally positioned LC display, ventilation nozzles and storage compartment. The operating devices for the ventilation and air conditioning are located on the lower part. The newly developed Blue & Me TomTom, which combines satellite navigation, hands-free system and entertainment functions in one device, was also optionally available. A novelty was the ambient lighting, used for the first time in a Fiat brand vehicle, with the center console being illuminated with indirect light.

The Punto Evo was offered in Germany in four equipment variants:

  • Active : four airbags, anti-lock braking system for the brakes (ABS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), electronic driving stability program (ESP) with traction control (ASR) and starting aid on the hill (Hill Holder), electrically assisted dual drive power steering, heat protection glazing, height and axially adjustable steering wheel , height-adjustable driver's seat, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, front electric windows, central locking and daytime running lights
  • Dynamic (in addition to the Active equipment): six airbags, manual air conditioning, rear seat bench that can be folded down at a ratio of 60:40, RDS car radio with CD and MP3 player, remote control for central locking, and exterior mirrors and door handles painted in the vehicle color
  • Racing (in addition to the Dynamic equipment): Fog lights with integrated cornering light function, leather steering wheel, Blue & Me infotainment system, heated exterior mirrors, 16 "alloy wheels, tinted rear windows, chrome-plated door sills and tinted headlight glasses
  • Sport (in addition to the Racing equipment): Ambient lighting of the interior, 17 "alloy wheels, roof spoiler and side skirts in body color and chrome-plated exterior mirror housings

The prices have been increased compared to the previous version, as various features have been omitted due to the basic equipment with the ESP and were now subject to a surcharge. The prices for special equipment were also increased, for example the surcharges for special colors.

Punto (2012-2018)

A facelift was carried out in early January 2012. The chrome strip on the front was omitted, as were the plastic inserts in the front and rear bumpers. In addition to a new 62 kW (84 PS) turbo gasoline engine, an equally powerful compression-ignition diesel is offered, with a consumption of 3.5 l per 100 km.

After the revision, there were only three configurations: Pop, Easy and Sport. Each equipment variant costs 1000 euros extra.

Engines, equipment and safety

In June 2015, the gasoline and natural gas engines were officially converted to Euro 6. In the course of this, the last diesel engine was also dropped. Only two equipment variants were available for the vehicle: Mystyle and Lounge . The Punto Mystyle is the new entry-level variant and is only offered with the 1.2 8V engine. In August 2016, the 70 kW (95 PS) 1.3-liter diesel engine with Euro 6 came back on the market.

As early as spring 2014, it was reported that Fiat wanted to stop production of the Punto in 2015, but this was not the case until August 2018. From summer 2017, only one equipment variant was available (in Germany as Series 8 , in Austria as Nuova Collezione ), which could be additionally upgraded with different combinable packages and was only delivered as a 5-door. The most recently offered engines were the 1.2 8V gasoline engine, in which the previously offered automatic start-stop system was omitted as the basic engine. A 1.4 8V petrol engine with 57 kW (77 PS), a two-cylinder 0.9 8V MultiAir petrol engine with 77 kW (105 PS) and the reintroduced 1.3 liter diesel engine were optionally available. All three were equipped with an automatic start-stop system. In addition, a modified version of the 1.4 8V petrol engine with 57 kW (77 PS) with "Natural Power", a natural gas drive, was available.

In December 2017, the Punto was subjected to another Euro NCAP test, whereby it was rated with zero stars in the overall rating, although the passive crash safety was rated significantly higher. The reason for this was the lack of electronic driver assistance systems, such as B. Distance radar, drowsiness warning or lane departure warning, called. The Grande Punto, which is practically identical to the later facelift models Punto Evo and the Punto in terms of body and chassis, achieved five out of five possible stars in the Euro NCAP test.

The engines are equipped with the newly developed MultiAir technology, which should make it possible to increase the maximums of power and torque with reduced average consumption. For example, the 1.4-16V MultiAir engine in the Fiat Punto Evo offers 12 percent more power and around 15 percent more maximum torque. The inlet valves are now operated via an electronically controlled hydraulic system. This means that the time, duration and number of valve openings are variable, so that the throttle valve in the intake tract is no longer required. The throttle losses, which affect the efficiency of the engine, especially when the throttle valve is not fully open, should be reduced.
