Giandomenico Basso (born September 15, 1973 in Montebelluna ) is an Italian rally driver .
Career
Giandomenico Basso began his karting career in 1981 and drove his first rally in 1994. In 1998 he made his debut in the World Rally Championship in the Fiat Seicento Sporting at the San Remo Rally . From 2001 he started in the Fiat Punto S1600 in the Junior World Rally Championship . With two JWRC podium finishes, he reached fifth place in the championship. In 2002 he made three podiums in the JWRC and finished fourth in the championship at the end of the season.
From 2003 Basso continued his career in the European Rally Championship and in the Italian Rally Championship . In 2003 he was runner-up in the Italian championship. In the ERC he achieved eleventh place in the drivers' championship with third place in the Mille Miglia rally. From 2004 he started with his new co-driver Mitia Dotta . Basso won the Mille Miglia rally and finished the season on the sixth championship course of the ERC and fourth in the Italian championship. In 2005 he played a full season in the ERC for the first time. He was victorious in Rally Bulgaria and EKO Rally and finished three other rallies in second place. In the fight for the title he had to admit defeat Renato Travaglia by only three points .
From the 2006 season, the Fiat factory team used the more powerful Fiat Grande Punto Abarth S2000 , with which Basso now competed in rallies. In the ERC he achieved victories in the Fiat Rally , the Belgium Ypres Westhoek Rally , the Rally Bulgaria and the Rali Vinho da Madeira and thus became the superior European Rally Champion. Since the rallies he won in Ypres and Bulgaria were also part of the newly founded Intercontinental Rally Challenge , he also achieved overall victory in the IRC. In 2007, Basso started again in the Italian championship. He regularly finished on the podium and finished three rallies as the winner. At the end of the season he had collected the most points and became Italian rally champion. During his guest starts in the IRC, he also won the Rali Vinho da Madeira and came second in the San Remo Rally. The successes were enough for fifth place in the overall ranking of the IRC.
Starting in 2008, Basso and the Fiat factory team competed in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge for most of the season. There he won victories in the Principe de Asturias Rally and the San Remo Rally and finished the championship in third place. In 2009, Basso won the Rali Vinho da Madeira and reached fifth place in the overall ranking of the IRC. He was now back in the European Rally Championship, in which he was very successful with a total of seven ERC victories and was European champion for the second time after three years. In 2010 Basso took part again in the Italian championship. However, he remained without a win and ended the season on the fourth championship course.
After the 2010 season, Basso left his long-term employer, Fiat. After initially contesting the 2011 Monte Carlo Rally with a privately entered Peugeot 207 S2000 , he was signed by the Proton works team. With the Proton Satria Neo S2000 , he completed a program of six rallies in the 2011 IRC .
