The Monte Carlo Rally , officially Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo , shortly Monte , is a rally that the Automobile Club de Monaco will be held (ACM). It takes place mainly in the Maritime Alps of the hinterland in France . In Monaco itself and along the Côte d'Azur , only transfer stages are used.

With the Monaco Grand Prix , the 24 Hours of Le Mans , the Dakar Rally , the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500 , the Monte Carlo Rally is one of the most prestigious motor racing events in the world.

Routing and characteristics

As a real asphalt competition, the road layout over several mountain passes and the mostly completely unpredictable weather in the French Maritime Alps make the Monte Carlo Rally one of the most difficult events. A special stage can begin on dry asphalt and lead over snow-covered or icy sections in higher regions, so choosing the right tires plays a decisive role.

One of the most famous special stages in the world is completed at the Monte Carlo Rally . It leads from La Bollène-Vésubie to Sospel or Moulinet or vice versa. The Col de Turini is crossed via a pass road with many hairpin bends , which is often snow-covered or is otherwise pelted with snow by spectators. This special stage is usually held at the end of the rally on the night of the long knives .

history

The Monte Carlo Rally is considered "the mother" of today's rally sport. Its beginnings are generally dated to the first staging of the Monte Carlo Rally in 1911, which was co-initiated by Prince Albert I. At that time it was still a so-called rally that was supposed to attract tourists to the Principality of Monaco in the winter season. On January 21, 1911, a total of 20 participants set off for Monaco in Geneva, Paris, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Berlin, Vienna and Brussels. The rally has been organized by the traditional Automobile Club de Monaco since 1925 .

From 1973 to 2008, the event was one of the World Rally Championship ( WRC and World Rally Championship ), which always began in January with this classic. In recent years, however, the route has been drastically shortened to make it more suitable for television. The notorious winding stage over the Col de Turini was no longer held at night and in 2007 was even left out completely. This so-called night of the long knives was once the highlight of the Monte and for many fans even the absolute highlight of every World Rally Championship season.

In order to no longer have to meet the strict requirements of the WRC and to be able to carry out night stages again, the ACM separated from the WRC in 2008. The Monte has been part of the annual Intercontinental Rally Challenge since 2009 . Since then, the night of the long knives with the crossing of the Col de Turini has been on the program again. In addition, transfers Euro Sport Monte Carlo Rally since 2009 live stages. For the 2012 season, this event was again included in the program of the World Rally Championship.

winner

The names of the great rally experts appear in the list of winners. Record winners are the French Sébastien Loeb and Sébastien Ogier , who were each successful seven times. Ogier also holds the record of six straight wins. The uncrowned king of the Monte is for many rally fans the German Walter Röhrl , who won the rally four times in four different cars of the brands Fiat , Opel , Lancia and Audi . The history of the small cult car Mini , albeit in its sporty Cooper S version, is after no less than four overall victories in a row (one of which was revoked by the rally management from the manufacturer BMC , but under very controversial circumstances) in the 1960s -Years inextricably linked with the history of the Monte Carlo Rally.

Processing in films

In Claude Lelouche's Oscar-winning film A Man and a Woman (1966), the hero drives the Monte Carlo Rally and uses the (fictional) racing car to reach his lover.

In 1969, the Monte Carlo Rally gave its name to the comedy film Monte Carlo Rally (original title: Monte Carlo or Bust ) by director Ken Annakin , with Tony Curtis , Mireille Darc and Gert Fröbe . The film is set in the 1920s and thus in the early years of the rally.

In 1977 the Disney Film Studios brought the third film in the Herbie series with the title The Great Beetle in the Monte Carlo Rally (original title: Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo ) in the cinemas, which was directed by Vincent McEveety and starring Dean Jones , Don Knotts and Roy Kinnear starring.
