Björn Waldegård (born November 12, 1943 in Solna , Sweden ; † August 29, 2014 ) was a Swedish rally driver who was still active in motorsport with historic rally cars . He lived in Rimbo near Uppsala . In the last few years he started together with his son Mattias in a Porsche 911 Carrera . Waldegård's nickname is “Walle”.

Career

Waldegård was rally world champion in 1979 in a Ford Escort RS1800 and in 1974 in a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR behind Austrian Franz Wurz rallycross vice- European champion . Overall, he was successful in rallying for over 40 years.

His connection to racing vehicles has recently been shown above all in a representative manner, for example as a driver of racing taxis on the occasion of the international Arosa ClassicCar hill climb . Waldegård died at the age of 70 of complications from cancer.
