Didier Auriol (born August 18, 1958 in Montpellier ) is a French rally driver .

Career

At the age of 21 Didier Auriol started driving an old Simca 1000 rallies. He drove the Simca for two years, then bought a Renault 5 Turbo . He drove this car in the French rally championship. In 1986 an MG dealer financed a Metro 6 R4 for him . With this car he won his first rally in the French rally championship. In 1987 and 1988 he won the national championship with a Ford Sierra RS Cosworth.

The 1998 Toyota Corolla WRC

Auriol won the first world championship run in France ( Rally Corsica ) in 1988 , also with a Ford Sierra RS Cosworth. For 1989 Auriol got a place in the Lancia team, where he drove for four years. In 1990 he became vice world champion with the Lancia Delta Integrale 16V.

In the fight for the world title in 1994 Didier Auriol prevailed against Carlos Sainz (Subaru) and team mate Juha Kankkunen with a Toyota Celica Turbo 4WD. In 1995 the Toyota team was banned from the World Championship because of illegal turbochargers. Auriol only drove sporadically in the World Rally Championship. In 1999 he again contested a whole rally season with Toyota. With the Corolla WRC he finished third in the overall classification. At the 2005 Monte Carlo Rally , Auriol finally said goodbye to the WRC .

With four victories in the Race of Champions in 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1999, Auriol is one of the most successful participants in this event.
