Hannu Olavi Mikkola (born May 24, 1942 in Joensuu ) is a former Finnish rally driver .

Career

Hannu Mikkola's rally career spanned 31 years. He started rallies in a Volvo PV544 in 1963 and was one of the most successful drivers in the 1980s. Hannu Mikkola and co-driver Arne Hertz met in 1977. You won the British rally championship in 1978 with a Ford Escort and the 1983 world rally championship . The duo drove a total of 13 years of rallies until Hertz resigned in 1991. He was replaced by Johnny Johansson . Together with his teammate Michèle Mouton , Mikkola was the first driver in 1981 to start a world championship rally with an Audi quattro . In 1983 he became world rally champion with Audi. Mikkola was the first world rally champion with an all-wheel drive vehicle. He also became the oldest world rally champion at the age of 41

In 2011 Hannu Mikkola was inducted into the Rally Hall of Fame .
