As a further special feature, a 2.0-liter diesel engine with 110 kW and 350 Nm torque was introduced in the spring of 2008, which is the only series-produced boxer diesel engine in the world. Until 2011, Subaru offered a LPG system ex works in conjunction with the 2.0 and 2.5 liter gasoline engines .

Model generations

Legacy BC / BJF (1989-1994)

The first Legacy was presented worldwide in January 1989. The standard equipment of the Sedan 2200 AWD sedan included a 4-speed gearshift, ABS, power steering, central locking, a height-adjustable steering wheel, two electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, electric windows, a roll-back lock and an electric sliding glass roof, controlled three-way catalytic converter .

The following models were initially available in Germany:

  • Sedan 1800 (sedan): 1.8-liter four-cylinder boxer engine (76 kW / 103 hp), price in 1989: 29,000 DM
  • Sedan 2200 (sedan): 2.2-liter four-cylinder boxer engine (100 kW / 136 hp), price in 1989: 35,000 DM
  • Kombi Station (station wagon in basic equipment) 1.8-liter four-cylinder boxer engine (76 kW / 103 PS), price 1989: 28,000 DM
  • Kombi Super Station 1800 (station wagon with extended equipment) 1.8-liter four-cylinder boxer engine (76 kW / 103 PS), price 1989: 31,300 DM
  • Kombi Super Station 2200 (station wagon with better equipment) 2.2-liter four-cylinder boxer engine (100 kW / 136 PS), price 1989: 36,000 DM

The Sedan and Super Station was also available with a 4-speed all-wheel automatic transmission and all vehicles offered were satisfied with regular gasoline.

After a facelift in August 1991, a 2.0-liter turbo engine with 147 kW (200 hp) was also offered. Outwardly, the turbo variant differed from the other models in terms of tires, an air scoop , rear and rear spoiler. There were also special models such as the Hubertus and a limited "Edition" version that was only sold in 1992. Building on the 2.0GL model, this edition had additional features such as a sunroof and its own pattern in the upholstery.

Legacy BD / BG (1994-1999)

The second series was introduced in September 1994, the model names have been changed as follows:

  • Legacy LX or SwissStation (simply equipped basic model, e.g. offered in Switzerland)
  • Legacy GL (simply equipped model with 2.0 liter engine)
  • Legacy GX (better equipped model with 2.2-liter, from mid-1996 with 2.5-liter engine)
  • Legacy Outback (model with increased ground clearance, from mid-1996 with 2.5-liter engine)

The output of the 2.2-liter engine was reduced from 100 kW (136 hp) to 94 kW (128 hp), while that of the 2.0-liter engine remained at 85 kW. The 1.8-liter engine and the turbo model were omitted. The GL and GX models were available as both a sedan and a station wagon, the Outback was only available as a station wagon. With the new series, driver and front passenger airbags were installed in legacy models for the first time.

As part of a facelift in July 1996, the 2.2-liter engine was replaced by a 2.5-liter engine with 110 kW (150 hp). The model had air suspension, with the help of which the ground clearance could be increased by 40 mm. In addition, the Legacy Outback model series was introduced, which had higher ground clearance and special equipment for use on rough roads, such as a rear-axle limited-slip differential . With the facelift, the safety equipment was also expanded to include side airbags, depending on the equipment line.

Legacy BE / BH (1998-2003)

3rd generation
Subaru Legacy Sedan (1998-2003)

Subaru Legacy Sedan (1998-2003)

Production period: 1998-2003
Body versions : Limousine , station wagon
Engines: Petrol engines :
2.0–2.5 liters
(92–206 kW)
Length: 4605-4680 mm
Width: 1695 mm
Height: 1415-1515 mm
Wheelbase : 2650 mm
Empty weight : 1390-1505 kg

The significantly modernized third series was introduced in November 1998, with production of the previous generation continuing until March 1999.

  • Legacy GL (basic equipment with 2.0 liter engine and 92 kW / 125 PS)
  • Legacy GX (better equipment with 2.5-liter engine and 115 kW / 156 PS)
  • Legacy GT (full equipment with 2.0 liter twin turbo engine and 206 kW / 280 PS) not on the German market.
  • Legacy GT-B is an expanded version of the Legacy GT, the "B" in the name refers to the standard Bilstein chassis
  • Legacy Outback (higher off-road version with 2.5-liter engine and 115 kW / 156 hp, from spring 2000 also with 3.0-liter engine and 154 kW / 209 hp)

The output of the engines was increased and with the Outback H6 3.0 introduced in spring 2000, a six-cylinder boxer engine was used for the first time in the Legacy. The wagon version of the 2.5-liter and 3-liter automatic models received a vehicle dynamics control with the sales designation VDC .

Legacy BL / BP (2003-2009)

The fourth series was introduced in September 2003 and was again characterized by a significantly more modern design compared to the previous model. To date, it is the most commercially successful legacy model. The individual variants were initially only differentiated by the cubic capacity, as designations such as GL and GX were omitted. The Outback was only available as a station wagon in Europe, all other models were sold both as sedans and station wagons. The trunk volume of the station wagon was 459 to 1649 liters, and that of the sedan was 433 liters. The payload ranged from 435 kg (2.0D station wagon) to 550 kg (2.0R and 2.5i sedan). The materials in the interior were predominantly of high quality, which was particularly noticeable in the haptic perception and was discussed in various vehicle tests. The bonnet and tailgate (in the estate variant) were also made of aluminum to reduce the vehicle weight, which was not common in mid-range vehicles at the time. Another special feature was the use of red LEDs for the third brake light and the rear fog light of the station wagon.

The following engines were available at the start of sales in 2003:

  • Legacy 2.0 (101 kW / 137 PS and basic equipment)
  • Legacy 2.5 (121 kW / 165 PS and better equipment with the optional "Comfort Package")
  • Legacy 3.0R (180 kW / 245 PS and top equipment)
  • Outback 2.5 (higher light off-road version with 121 kW / 165 PS and basic equipment)
  • Outback 3.0R (higher light off-road version with 180 kW / 245 PS and better equipment)

A revised engine range was available from September 2005:

The 2.0-liter engine received variable valve timing . The 2.5-liter engine, which still corresponds to an older model, was only offered for the outback.

  • Legacy 2.0R (121 kW / 165 PS and better equipment from model year 2006)
  • Legacy 3.0R (180 kW / 245 PS and top equipment)
  • Legacy 3.0R spec.B (180 kW / 245 PS and top equipment with additional sports suspension and a larger VA brake)
  • Outback 2.5 (higher light off-road version with 121 kW / 165 PS and basic equipment)
  • Outback 3.0R (higher light off-road version with 180 kW / 245 PS and better equipment from model year 2005)

In addition, a LPG system ( Subaru Ecomatic ) could be ordered from the factory for the Legacy from mid-2005 . In the same year the special model Celebration was offered, which had additional equipment features. For the 2006 model year, in addition to the cubic capacity specifications, the following new designations were introduced for the equipment variants:

  • Trend (basic equipment)
  • Active (also with vehicle dynamics control ( called VDC ), head airbags, seat heating)
  • Comfort (also with leather interior)
  • Navigation (additionally with navigation system)

The vehicle dynamics control VDC was available for the models 3.0R (only automatic), 3.0R spec.B (gearshift and automatic) and 2.0R (automatic from Active equipment).

Outside of Europe, other engines were available, for example turbo petrol engines, which have the abbreviation "GT" in the model name.

Facelift 2007

In April 2007 the Legacy underwent a visual upgrade. The exterior design includes a new front section with a modified radiator grille, more pronounced fenders, new front headlights (xenon light was now available in some versions) and rear lights, as well as a modified chrome trim on the tailgate. In the interior, the center console and the display instruments have been heavily redesigned. In 2008, the engine range was revised again, the 2.5-liter was available again with a different output, the 2.0R now developed 150 hp. A newly developed diesel boxer with an output of 110 kW (150 hp) was added from March. The sales designation for this variant is 2.0D.

reliability

The Legacy is considered a durable and reliable car and scores very well in the statistics of TÜV and ADAC. In the TÜV Auto-Report 2008, the Legacy came third among 4- and 5-year-old vehicles (after Porsche 911 and Honda Jazz ).

Special models

The turbo model of the first series (type BC / BJ) was also imported to Germany. With a power to weight ratio of 6.9 kg / hp, it had a very good engine.

Models for rough road use were sold under the name "Hubertus", the most important equipment features were a level control and front protection bars in the vehicle color.

Since the beginning of 1997, a version with increased ground clearance and special features has been sold under the name "Outback". The Outback has been run as a separate model series since the end of 1999 .

In the USA a pickup variant of the type BE / BH was sold under the name Baja , about 150 copies of this model were imported to Germany.

The legacy worldwide

The Legacy is manufactured at Subaru's main plant in Gunma Yajima, Japan and in Lafayette, Indiana, USA.

The main markets for the Subaru Legacy are Japan, North America as well as Australia and New Zealand. Other models are offered in these countries, some examples:

  • In Japan there is a TransCare model for drivers with walking difficulties with a driver's seat that can be rotated for entry and exit.
  • models with turbo or twin turbo engines and up to 206 kW (280 hp) are available in Japan, Australia and the USA.

In Australia, the Legacy is sold under the name "Liberty".

Existence in Germany

The stock of Subaru Legacy (BC / BJF, BD / BG and BE / BH) is listed according to manufacturer (HSN) and type code numbers (TSN) in Germany according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority . Types with less than 100 vehicles are not shown. Until 2007, the inventory included the number of vehicles registered as well as the number of temporary shutdowns. Since 2008, the inventory has only included "flowing traffic" including the seasonal license plates.
