A frontal protection bar ( bull catcher , cow catcher , deer catcher ) is a front structure on road vehicles that was originally used as a ram protection, for example against game . In Western European road traffic , they are mainly used for optical tuning to give the vehicle a robust appearance. They are mostly chrome-plated ; some are painted in the vehicle color. Stainless steel specimens are often unpainted and polished. In commercial vehicles, the front protection bar also serves as a carrier for headlights or a cable winch, for example .

Bull bars have been criticized because they increase the risk of injury to pedestrians , especially children, in a collision. Since the beginning of 2006, there has been a ban on rigid brackets in the EU for newly registered vehicles of class M1 (cars) and N1 (trucks) with a maximum permitted total weight of 3.5 tonnes. For buses and commercial vehicles with a gross weight of over 3.5 tonnes, front protection bars can still be approved. They have been banned in Morocco since 2018
