Road vehicle
A road vehicle is a land vehicle that is primarily intended to operate on roads . It is characteristic of all road vehicles that they can maintain or change their direction of travel on the surface they drive on with the help of static friction and do not need any tracks .
Road vehicles can be divided into:
- muscle powered vehicles , e.g. B. a bicycle , longboard or a horse and cart
- wind-powered vehicles, e.g. B. Sailing car (of no relevance, only listed for the sake of completeness)
- Gravity-powered vehicles: soap box , bobby car , mountain monk (downhill scooter)
- Motorized vehicles: motor vehicles ( automobiles , motorized two-wheelers , tractors )

The existing legal definitions for road vehicles are aimed solely at the use of vehicles in public road traffic .
The design of the vehicles approved for use on public roads is
- in Germany through the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO)
- in Switzerland by the Ordinance on the Technical Requirements for Road Vehicles (VTS) and
- in Austria by the Motor Vehicle Act ( KFG )
regulated.
