The Subaru XT (also known as Alcyone or Vortex in other countries ) is a sports coupé with all-wheel drive that was offered in Germany from autumn 1984 to the end of 1990. The wedge-shaped body has a low drag coefficient (C w ) of 0.29. Technically, the vehicle is closely related to the Subaru L-series , many vehicle parts are the same. In Germany, the XT remained an exotic one. It only found 1056 buyers in total. The pop-up headlights are typical of Japanese coupés of the 1980s .

Motor / drive

The Subaru XT was only offered in Europe with a water-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine (engine code EA82T) with overhead camshafts, an aluminum engine block , water-cooled turbocharger and a displacement of 1800 cm³ . It achieved a maximum of 100 kW (first series from 11/1984 to 12/1987 without G-Kat; 88 kW with G-Kat). This engine (with and without turbocharger) was also used in the Subaru L series . In other countries, the vehicle was also offered without a turbocharger with all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive and with a six-cylinder boxer engine with 2700 cm³ (e.g. in the USA as the XT-6 model of the second series from 01/1988), this version was outside USA not available.

As transmission a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic was offered. The vehicle also has permanent all-wheel drive (second series). In the first series it can be switched on manually.

The chassis with MacPherson struts and wishbones at the front and a trailing arm axle at the rear is air-sprung and height-adjustable. In the raised position, it automatically lowers from 80 km / h for safety reasons (as is also the case with the Subaru L series ). There are disc brakes on all wheels, and internally ventilated on the front axle . A hill start aid is also available as additional equipment .

Furnishing

The Subaru XT has a large status display in the dashboard , which shows the most important processes in and on the vehicle: open doors, activated all-wheel drive and other things. In addition, the Subaru XT could also be ordered with digital fittings.

successor

In the fall of 1991 Subaru brought another coupé onto the market with the Subaru SVX . It had a much higher purchase price, a much more powerful engine, was only available with a four-speed automatic transmission and was therefore intended for a different target group. The SVX's 3.3 liter six-cylinder boxer engine developed 169 kW, later 162 kW. Of the total of approximately 25,000 SVX produced, only about 850 made it onto the German market.
