The Subaru 1500 is the first vehicle in the automotive division of Fuji Heavy Industries . The prototype developed under the code name P1 had a self-supporting body, independent front suspension on double wishbones and a rigid rear axle on leaf springs with three layers. The 1500 has a similar appearance to the Peugeot 403 . The 1.5 liter four-cylinder OHV engine, code-named "FG4A" came from the Peugeot 202 and was manufactured under license from Fuji Precision Technology later known as the Prince Motor Company . Another engine with the code name "L4-1" was later developed by Fuji Heavy Industries, also a water-cooled 1.5-liter in-line engine with four cylinders and overhead valves , but which was 20 percent lighter than its predecessor. Only 20 "P-1" 's were built, 11 of them with the "FG4A" engine. Six units of the 1500 were made available to the Isesaki Ota Honjo Taxi Company for testing. These were successful, which encouraged Fuji Heavy Industries to build vehicles and, four years later, launched the first model in large-scale production with the Subaru 360 .
