Wilhelm von Speyr (born September 19, 1852 in Basel ; † August 29, 1939 there ) was a Swiss psychiatrist .
Life
Wilhelm von Speyr grew up as one of eight children of the merchant Johannes von Speyr (1811–1901) and Charlotte Riggenbach (1819–1858) in the house where he was born, “Zum Rosengarten” in Basel. His mother died when he was eight or nine, his father remarried and had two more children.
Von Speyr studied medicine at the University of Basel . While still a student, he worked from 1876 to 1878 as an assistant to Ludwig Wille in the insane department of the citizens' hospital . After the state examination , he went on a study trip to Vienna, completed a study trip to London and finally became assistant to Auguste Forel at Burghölzli . His dissertation on the alcoholic mental illnesses in the Basler madhouse 1876-78 he had already finished early 1880, it appeared in 1882. On April 18, 1882 he became a secondary doctor in the Waldau . After director Rudolf Schärer resigned due to illness , he was appointed director of Waldau by the Bern government council in 1890 and professor of psychiatry at the University of Bern in 1891 . He held both offices until the end of March 1933. Then he returned to Basel.
During his tenure, the Waldau was greatly expanded (the Münsingen and Bellelay institutions were opened at the same time ). The use of physical restraint was further reduced ( no restraint ) and alcohol abstinence was introduced. He meticulously read all of the patient's correspondence. Von Speyr remained single.
