Werner Konrad Othmar Strik (born October 26, 1958 in Gamburg ) is a German - Italian psychiatrist and psychotherapist .

Life

Strik studied medicine at the University of Florence from 1979 to 1985 , where he received his doctorate in February 1986 . He completed his specialist training at the Psychiatric Clinic (with Adolfo Pazzagli ) and the Neurological Clinic (with Roberto Zappoli ) at the University of Florence and at the Psychiatric University Clinic in Würzburg (with Helmut Beckmann ). In August 1990 he became a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy . In October 1991 he did his doctorate again at the University of Würzburg . From November 1991 to October 1993 he did a research stay, funded by a grant from the German Research Foundation , with Dietrich Lehmann in the EEG-EP mapping laboratory of the Neurological Clinic of the University Hospital Zurich . From November 1993 he was Vice Director of the Clinic and Head of the Department of Psychiatric Neurophysiology at the Psychiatric University Clinic in Würzburg . In July 1994 he completed his habilitation at the University of Würzburg.

In October 1998, Strik succeeded Wolfgang Böker as a full professor of clinical psychiatry at the University of Bern . At the same time he became director of the University Clinic for Clinical Psychiatry , and since April 2007 he has been director of the merged Clinic and Polyclinic for Psychiatry. At the umbrella organization of these clinics, the University Psychiatric Services Bern (UPD Bern), he was managing director ad interim from July 2000 to July 2002 and medical director from August 2002 until his resignation in August 2007. In 2009 he rejoined the management of UPD Bern. In March 2012, Strik was released by UPD director Regula Mader. The university management refused to release him in June 2012. Since there was no agreement between the UPD and the university, the decision went to the government council of the canton of Bern , which on June 27, 2012 confirmed the release of Strik as clinic director, but not as professor, and announced that it would consider a discharge. On December 5, 2012, the government council announced that Strik would not be dismissed and that his exemption would be lifted with immediate effect. According to the government council's report, there were no valid reasons to justify the request for dismissal.

Strik was President of the Psychophysiology Section of the World Psychiatric Association from January 1999 to December 2006 . From January 2002 to December 2007 he was President of the Swiss Society for Biological Psychiatry (SSBP). Since July 2003 he has been editor in chief of the journal Neuropsychobiology .

Strik is married and has two grown children.
