Rudolf Schärer

Franz Johann Rudolf Schärer (born August 22, 1823 in Unterseen , † February 16, 1890 in Bern ) was a Swiss psychiatrist .

Life

The son of Rudolf B. Franz Schärer († 1844), pastor at the Nydegg Church , studied medicine and received his doctorate . As a student, he taught swimming and gymnastics at schools in Bern . In 1846, Schärer became a secondary doctor at the Outer Hospital, a branch of the Inselspital . From 1855 he worked in the newly built asylum Waldau , whose director he became in 1859. From 1861 he also held clinical-psychiatric lectures there. In 1863 he received his habilitation and on May 23, 1874 he was appointed associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Bern. In 1890 he had to resign due to a serious illness, his successor as clinic director and psychiatry professor was Wilhelm von Speyr .

Schärer was a fan of outdoor gymnastics, hiking , swinging and shooting . He also wrote a guide for wrestlers. For the Waldau he obtained the purchase of an agricultural property; he instituted agricultural work and feasts for the patients.

Rudolf Schärer's sister Luise Stauffer-Schärer was the mother of the painter Karl Stauffer-Bern .
