The first generation of the Pleo started on October 9, 1998 and replaced the Subaru Vivio when Japanese regulations allowed slightly larger vehicles in the kei car class. Unlike its predecessor, the Pleo was no longer officially offered in Europe. The Pleo was also available as a delivery van known as the "Van". In June 1999, Subaru launched a luxury edition of the Pleo called the Subaru Nesta . In October 2000, the Pleo was redesigned for the first time and a retro-style edition called Niccoto was offered. For Subaru's 40th 4WD birthday in 2002, three limited four-wheel drive editions were launched and a third edition was launched in October. Based on the Pleo, the Subaru R2 was also offered from 2003 . From June 2007 only the van model was available. In December 2009 the production of the Pleo I was stopped.

Based on a cooperation between Toyota and Subaru , the new model of the Pleo will be produced for Subaru by the Toyota subsidiary Daihatsu . It is a version of the Daihatsu Mira known in Europe as Daihatsu Cuore . The model is available with three doors and an emergency rear bench as the Pleo Van or, at a higher price, as the Pleo with five doors and four full seats. All variants are also offered with all-wheel drive. The Pleo Van is available with a 5-speed manual gearbox or an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT). As part of a small facelift in mid-2011, fuel consumption was reduced and ABS was introduced as standard equipment. Since then, a consumption of 4.1 to 5.0 l / 100 km has been specified, depending on the version.

Pleo Plus

A shorter, five-door variant was sold under the name Pleo Plus from the end of 2012. This is more different from Daihatsu Mira. While the Pleo is only offered in one equipment variant, there are four versions for the Pleo Plus, whereby no all-wheel drive is available for the cheapest. Starting in the second equipment line, which is a little more expensive than the standard Pleo, an emergency brake assistant and adaptive brake lights have been included since August 2013 . All variants are linked to a continuously variable transmission and have a start-stop system . The manufacturer specifies average fuel consumption of 3.0 l / 100 km (front-wheel drive) and 3.3 l / 100 km (all-wheel drive).
