The Subaru Outback is a mid-range car from the Japanese car manufacturer Subaru . It is based on the Subaru Legacy and appeared in Germany at the end of 1996 as Subaru Legacy Outback , but has been listed as an independent model since the end of 1999.
The differences to the Legacy lie in the increased ground clearance and some plastic panels on the body. Like most Subaru models, the Outback has permanent all-wheel drive . The offers from competitors such as the Audi Allroad Quattro and the Volvo XC70 were positioned slightly higher in terms of dimensions, performance and prices.
In Germany, the model was only offered as a station wagon, while there was also a notchback version in the USA and Japan until 2014.

A 2.5-liter boxer engine with 110 kW (150 hp) was available when it was launched . This was to remain the only engine of this generation.
At the end of 1999 the first Outback generation was replaced.

Facelift
A facelift was carried out in autumn 2008 . At the same time, a boxer diesel engine was also offered, which was also the first passenger car diesel engine in the world to be constructed in a boxer design. It had a displacement of 1998 cc and made 110 kW (150 hp). A typical feature of the Outback with a diesel engine is the additional air inlet in the bonnet.
The boxer diesel engine received the “Engine of the Year Award 2008” and the title “All-wheel-drive innovation of the year” from the editorial team of “AutoBild allrad”.

In September 2009 Subaru launched the fourth edition of the Outback. This was based on the Legacy BM / BR.
There were two gasoline engines and one diesel engine to choose from at the start of sales:
- 2.5-l four-cylinder gasoline engine with 123 kW (167 PS) (from 07.2009)
- 3.6-l six-cylinder gasoline engine with 191 kW (260 hp) (07.2009–05.2013)
- 2.0-l four-cylinder diesel with 110 kW (150 PS) (from 05.2013 also available with the continuously variable Lineartronic transmission)
In May 2013, the Outback underwent a facelift. Since then, the 2.5-liter gasoline engine has only been offered with the continuously variable "Lineartronic" transmission. The six-cylinder gasoline engine, however, was taken out of the range.

Sales of the fifth generation of the Outback in Germany started on March 28, 2015. This is based on the Legacy , which was also renewed at the same time and is no longer available in Germany. In early 2018, the outback received a facelift. The diesel engine has not been offered since then.
The two available engines are a 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 129 kW / 175 hp and a 2.0-l four-cylinder diesel with 110 kW / 150 hp. As was the case with the fourth Outback generation, the gasoline engine is only available in combination with the continuously variable automatic transmission “Lineartronic”, while the diesel engine is optionally available with a 6-speed transmission.
