Petter Solberg (born November 18, 1974 in Askim ) is a Norwegian rally and rallycross driver. He won the World Rally Championship in 2003 and the FIA World Rallycross Championship in 2014 and 2015. This makes him the first driver ever to become FIA world champion in two different disciplines (WRC and WRX).

Career

First successes in motorsport

Petter Solberg began in motorsport with RC cars and became Norwegian champion in 1987 at the age of 13. He switched from toy cars to real cars at the age of 18. In 1992, just one day after passing his driving test, Solberg made his debut in a Bilcross run. In 1993 he drove his second bilcross race that he won. He then switched to the national Norwegian rallycross scene to take part in rallycross races and hill climbs on gravel with a Ford Escort Mk II . In 1994 he won the title of Norwegian runner-up in both disciplines. For 1995 Solberg switched to the supernational series, his car was a Volvo 240 Turbo, which however was equipped with a naturally aspirated engine ( turbochargers were not allowed due to the regulations ). Solberg developed into a recognized driver. He won a total of 19 out of 21 races and was the Norwegian mountain and rallycross champion. He narrowly missed the Scandinavian Supernasjonal Berg title.

In 1996 he repeated these three successes, won 15 of 19 races, and secured two further championship and one runner-up titles. Solberg was considered a beacon of hope in motorsport. The Norwegians saw in him the new "Mister Rallycross" after Martin Schanche , a national hero. Petter Solberg was nicknamed "Spydeberg-Ekspressen" by the media after his place of residence. This was originally worn by the Norwegian ex-rally driver John Unnerud , who also came from Spydeberg.

Change from rallycross to rally sport

Petter Solberg's rally debut was with a Volvo 240 ( Volvo Original class ) at the Norwegian rally Bjørkelangen in 1995, with the current wife of his brother Henning, the Swede Maud (then family name Tidemand), acting as co-driver. In 1996, brother Henning gave him his own Toyota Celica ST165 to take part in the Hedemarken Rally in Norway, in which Solberg destroyed the car in a rollover. At the end of 1996, Petter Solberg said goodbye to rallycross because he was given a Toyota Celica ST185 for 1997, which was previously driven by the Swede Thomas "Rådis" Rådström . Solberg thus won the Norwegian mountain champion again and finished 5th in the Norwegian rally championship. In 1998 he secured the Norwegian rally title with a Toyota Celica ST205. He made a 16th place in the World Rally Championship belonging Rally Sweden for the first time attracted international attention.

1999–2000: Entry into the WRC with Ford

In 1998, Solberg's mentor John “Mister Škoda” Haugland ensured that Ford took a closer look at the then 23-year-old Norwegian talent. After Solberg was able to put himself in the limelight in a Ford group test, the British works team offered him a place for three years. Solberg's new co-driver was British Phil Mills . Solberg made his first WRC outing for Ford at the beginning of 1999 at the Rally Sweden . He finished eleventh with a Ford Escort WRC . He then received a new Ford Focus WRC . In his very first WRC rally with the vehicle, the Rallye Safari , he achieved fifth place and scored his first two WRC points. This was followed in 1999 by four more participations in WRC races, in which he remained without points. In 2000 , Solberg finished three times in the points in six outings for Ford.

2000–2001: Moved to Subaru

Petter Solberg in the Subaru Impreza WRC at Rally Finland 2001

Since Solberg's contract with Ford was not legally secured, he was able to switch to Subaru early during the 2000 season . There he completed the last four races of the season with the Subaru Impreza WRC , but did not get any points. The 2000 season ended Solberg with a total of six points on the tenth championship course. In 2001 Solberg competed for the first time in a full season in the World Rally Championship. The season started with a few accidents and technical defects. He finished second in the Rally Greece , mid-season, and was on the WRC podium for the first time. By the end of the season he had scored eleven points and was repeating his tenth place in the world championship.

2002–2005: Made it to the top of the world

From the 2002 season onwards , Solberg showed constant performance and was regularly in the points. At the Rally Argentina , the sixth rally of the year, he achieved his next podium finish with second place. He became increasingly successful, especially in the second half of the season. In third place at the Rally Finland , the Rally Sanremo and the Rally Australia followed the first victory in the WRC at the season finale in Wales . Solberg could no longer intervene in the fight for the world championship. Marcus Grönholm was already too far ahead in the points assessment. However, Solberg still managed to advance to the second championship place and become "Best of the Rest".

The 2003 season started very badly for Solberg with only three points in the first three rallies. Then at least two third places followed in New Zealand and Greece. The turning point came halfway through the season at the Cyprus Rally , from which he emerged as the winner. This was followed by a second place in the Finland Rally and victories in Australia and Corsica . Solberg fought a close duel with the aspiring Sébastien Loeb for the world championship. In the decisive Wales Rally, Solberg won ahead of Loeb and won the 2003 World Rally Championship by one point. Solberg was the first Norwegian to win the WRC world championship.

Solberg won five WRC races in 2004 , including rallies in New Zealand, Greece, Japan , Wales and Sardinia . Three failures in a row in the middle of the season threw him back in the title fight. His competitor Loeb, who hardly made any mistakes, set himself apart in the points classification and finally became champion by a clear margin. Solberg was runner-up in 2004.

At the beginning of 2005 , Solberg won the rallies in Sweden and the Mexico rally and took the lead in the standings. A little later he lost the lead in the championship to the Citroën driver Sébastien Loeb . In 2005 Solberg won the Rally Wales. At this rally, Markko Märtin's co-driver Michael Park was killed in an accident. As a result, Loeb, who had previously been ahead of Solberg, provoked a time penalty in order not to win under these circumstances and to become world champion prematurely. At the end of the season, Solberg had bad luck several times when he retired while in the lead at the Rally Japan and the Rally Australia. At the end of the season Solberg was again vice world champion. He placed because of the larger number of wins in front of the equal points Marcus Grönholm .

2006–2008: Lack of competitiveness

Petter Solberg in the Subaru Impreza WRC at the 2008 Monte Carlo Rally

In 2006 Solberg received a new version of the Subaru Impreza WRC. The vehicle was too slow and unreliable, so that it could not match the results of the previous year. Solberg had a winless season for the first time since 2001 and he only reached the podium occasionally. His best results were second places in Mexico, Argentina and Australia, as well as third place in Wales. In the championship he finished sixth at the end of the season. Solberg celebrated his 100th World Cup start this season.

The vehicle also prevented success in 2007 . From the fourth run of the season, Solberg drove a new evolutionary stage, which did not bring any great improvement in the results. In the early part of the season he had several failures that robbed him of the chance of possible podium finishes. At the Rally Portugal, Solberg moved up from fourth to second after the Ford factory drivers were relegated to a time penalty. Solberg had a strong rally in Greece, where he finished third. In the later course of the season Solberg was consistently in the points, but could not be at the very front. At the end of the year he was on the fifth championship course.

In the 2008 season started with Solberg in fifth place in the Monte Carlo Rally and fourth well in the Rally of Sweden, but he was thrown back in the next four rallies of accidents and technical problems. From the seventh round of the season, in Greece, Subaru provided him with a completely new vehicle that no longer had a notchback like its predecessor, but a hatchback. On his WRC debut with the new Impreza, Solberg showed the potential of the new car and achieved second place, making him back on the podium for the first time in a year. In the remaining eight rallies of the season he drove into the points without interruption, but did not manage to place another podium. At the end of the season he finished sixth in the championship behind his team-mate Christopher Atkinson .

2009 to 2011: As a privateer on Citroën

On December 16, 2008, Subaru announced that it would withdraw from the World Rally Championship due to falling sales . Solberg, who had a contract with Subaru until 2009, lost his job. Since he could not find a place with any works team, he built up his own Petter Solberg World Rally Team within a short time .

Petter Solberg in the Citroën Xsara WRC at the 2009 Cyprus Rally

After Solberg skipped the Rally Ireland , the start of the 2009 season , he was back at the following rally in Norway . Just a few weeks before the rally, Solberg acquired a 2006 Citroën Xsara WRC . With the comparatively old vehicle and as a small private team, he was surprisingly competitive. After finishing sixth overall at the Citroën debut in Norway, he achieved his first podium result as a privateer at the following rally in Cyprus with third place. Then he finished fourth at the Rally Portugal . Before the Rally Sardinia, he received an engine upgrade for his Xsara to 2006 specification in order to counteract deteriorating engine performance at high temperatures. In Sardinia he was able to celebrate another podium result with third place after Loeb, who was placed in front of him, fell back due to a time penalty. He achieved another good result at the Rally Poland with fourth place. Technical defects prevented further success. For the last two races of the season, Solberg changed vehicles and drove a Citroën C4 WRC . With his new vehicle, he finished fourth in the Catalonia Rally . At the season finale in Wales he got a place in the Citroën Junior Team and won fourth place. The 2009 World Championship ended Petter Solberg in fifth position as the best-placed private driver.

Petter Solberg in the Citroën C4 WRC at the 2010 Rally Finland

For the 2010 season , Solberg bought two Citroën C4 WRCs that were at the technical level of 2009. He wanted to compete for top positions in the world championship again, which he succeeded despite a small budget. After a disappointing start to the season in Sweden, he finished second at the Mexico Rally and thus the best result since 2008. He was also able to keep pace with the top in third at the Jordan Rally and second at the Turkey Rally . After the Rally Portugal, Solberg's co-driver Phil Mills announced his immediate retirement from active rallying after eleven years of working together. From the Rally Bulgaria Solberg drove with Chris Patterson in the passenger seat. At the first joint rally in Bulgaria, Solberg and Patterson achieved third place. At the end of the season, Solberg made it onto the podium four times in a row. At first he was only barely beaten in second place in Japan, then he finished third in France and the last two rallies in 2010, in Catalonia and Wales, he finished second. In total, Solberg came on the podium in 8 of 13 rallies, but he was denied a hoped-for victory. He reached third place in the championship and thus his best placement since 2005.

In January 2011 Solberg made a guest start at the Monte Carlo Rally in the Peugeot works team. After being in second place in the meantime, he had to give up shortly before the end due to a technical defect.

Solberg in the Citroën DS3 WRC in the fresh snow of the 2011 Rally Sweden

He then went into the 2011 season as a privateer with a Citroën DS3 WRC . After a hapless start to the season, he achieved his first podium at the Rally Sardinia with third place. At the Rally Greece he was in the lead after the first day, but then had to play the "street sweeper" because of his first place on the grid and fell back to fourth place. His next podium was at the Rally Australia , where he finished third overall. He also achieved this position at the Rally France . A few hours after the rally, Petter Solberg was excluded from the event and third place was revoked. The reason was that his vehicle was weighed too light by four kilograms during the subsequent weighing. At the Rally Catalonia , he retired on the first special stage. In a tight curve he cut too tight and tore off a wheel at an obstacle. In Great Britain , too , he did not achieve the goal. At the end of the season, Solberg, as the best-placed privateer, took fifth place in the drivers' standings.

2012 works driver for Ford

On December 15, 2011, Petter Solberg signed a contract valid for the 2012 season with the Ford World Rally Team . As number 2 behind his team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala , he achieved his best result so far at this traditional event with third place overall at the Monte Carlo Rally .

Resignation from the WRC 2013

On December 4, 2012, Solberg announced to the press that he was retiring from the World Rally Championship. He was ready to drive at Ford without a fee, but not to finance his driver's seat himself. He informed the media about his future motorsport future on January 31, 2013. In a press release he announced that he was building a Citroën DS3 as a rallycross SuperCar, with which he contested the four Global X Games in 2013.

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

In an interview with American broadcaster THS Radio announced Solberg in December 2010 that he with a developed by our own team prototype called PS FX (for P etter S olberg and his French crew chief F rançois X Avier Demaison) in June 2011 on Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) in the USA. Due to scheduling problems between the WRC events, he then postponed his plan to 2012. But nothing came of that either, the plans were postponed indefinitely.

FIA European Rallycross Championship 2013

In 2013, Petter Solberg switched from rallying to rallycross . In the FIA European Rallycross Championship, Solberg started with his own team in all races. He finished his season eighth in the SuperCars class.

FIA World Rallycross Championship 2014 to 2016 in the Citroën DS3

In 2014 Solberg became the first world champion of the newly created FIA World Rallycross Championship in his Citroën DS3 SuperCar. This makes Solberg the first pilot to win two official FIA world championship titles. In 2015 Solberg defended his world championship title in the Citroën DS3 SuperCar. A year later he finished fourth in the World Cup.

FIA World Rallycross Championship 2017 to 2018 in the VW Polo

From 2017 Solberg worked with Volkswagen. His team with the official title PSRX Volkswagen Sweden used a VW Polo developed together with Volkswagen Motorsport . While PSRX driver Johan Kristoffersson won the drivers' championship and Solberg's team won the team classification, Solberg finished the season in third place. In 2018, PSRX Volkswagen Sweden is using a further developed, officially 570 PS strong VW Polo R. Johan Kristoffersson will again be at the start alongside Petter Solberg.

Personal

Petter Solberg had given up his apprenticeship as a painter and upholsterer in favor of his racing career. "Mister Hollywood", as his nickname , comes from Spydeberg in Østfold , about 50 km east of Oslo . He has had his official residence in Monaco since 2003 . Solberg comes from a family committed to motorsport . Through his marriage to Pernilla, he is connected to the Swedish rally and rallycross family Walfridsson, which is well known in the Scandinavian countries . Pernilla is one of the two daughters of the former Volvo factory driver ( Volvo R-Team ) Per-Inge "Pi" Walfridsson (including FIA European Rallycross Champion 1980 and fourth in the RAC rally in 1973). Pernilla's father became Petter Solberg's financial advisor and, among other things, managed his aircraft rental company PS Aviation AB , based in Torsby, Sweden . Per-Inge Walfridsson's two younger brothers, who are also enthusiastic about cars, are named Lars-Erik Walfridsson and Stig-Olov Walfridsson and are therefore Pernilla's uncles. Under her maiden name Pernilla Walfridsson, Solberg's wife was considered one of the best rally drivers in the world for a number of years. According to Petter Solberg, no less than four-time world rally champion Tommi Mäkinen classified her as the second fastest woman, behind Michèle Mouton . Petter and Pernilla have a son named Oliver, who, as a young cross-kart racing driver, is already in the focus of the Norwegian and Swedish media. The parents of Petter Solberg, both mother Tove and father Terje took several years to Bilcross race (dt. Autocross ) part; a rallycross league in Norway for smaller budgets . So son Petter got a taste for rallying at an early age and he worked as a mechanic , as did his brother Henning Solberg , who was almost two years older and who has been in the World Rally Championship since 1998 .

Honors

In 2003, Solberg won the Norwegian Sportsman of the Year election and the Aftenposten gold medal .
