The 58th Acropolis Rally (Greece) was held from May 24th to 27th, 2012. A total of 22 special stages were driven on gravel.
Reports
Day 1 (Thursday, May 24th)
After a skiing accident with a broken collarbone and a break at the Rally Argentina , Jari-Matti Latvala returned to the World Rally Championship . After the first and only special stage, over 25 kilometers on Thursday, Latvala stayed as the overall leader with a 2.8 second lead over Sébastien Loeb .
Day 2 (Friday, May 25th)
In the fourth special stage, Loeb (Citroën) took the lead in front of the two Ford factory drivers Latvala and Petter Solberg . After the second day Loeb was leading with a minimal lead of 6.5 seconds on Latvala. Despite a puncture, Solberg was in third place (+17.7 seconds).
3rd day (Saturday, May 26th)
Loeb and Latvala continued to race for the overall lead within seconds. After 13 special stages, Loeb was only just 2.2 seconds ahead. In SS14 Latvala had to change a wheel because of a puncture, which resulted in a loss of more than 3 minutes. In the 15th special stage it started to rain and the conditions on the gravel roads were not only difficult but also dangerous. Solberg won this test with a lot of risk and came within 10 seconds of Loeb. Loeb stayed at the top of the overall standings ahead of Solberg and Mikko Hirvonen (Citroën).
4th day (Sunday, May 27th)
Solberg started the 20th special stage (19.4 kilometers) ten seconds behind Loeb. Before the eight mile mark, he left the road and hit a tree. He tore off a rear wheel and had to give up the rally. Despite a tire damage and a wheel change, Loeb won the rally ahead of team-mate Hirvonen by 40 seconds.
