Aftenposten gold medal
The Aftenposten gold medal ( Norwegian Aftenpostens Gullmedalje ) is an award given annually by the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten . The award will be given to Norway's best athlete of the current calendar year, with men and women competing against each other. In the past, a three-person, annually changing jury consisting of sports journalists, commentators (usually an Aftenposten employee), historians or former athletes acted as jurors . The result is usually announced at the end of December.
The award was initiated in 1933 by the Oslo sports magazine Idrettsbladet . A year later, the Morgenbladet newspaper took over the organization. From then on, the sports award traded under the name Morgenbladets gullmedalje (English: Morgenbladet Gold Medal ), and from 1993 to 1996 as Stiftelsen Morgenbladets gullmedalje (German: Morgenbladet Gold Medal Foundation ). Aftenposten has been awarding the prize since 1997 . Like the well-known Holmenkollen Medal , according to the statutes, each athlete can only receive the Aftenposten medal once. Teams or coaches are excluded from the award. The winners will be honored with a gold medal and a framed caricature of themselves with the medal.
Award winners
In 49 out of 80 cases, athletes from summer sports were honored. Women have been successful 17 times, including Sarah Louise Rung , a disabled athlete, for the first time in 2012 . The sport most frequently represented among the winners is athletics (16 wins), followed by cross-country skiing (13) and speed skating (9) and alpine skiing (8).
Due to the Second World War , there was no award ceremony between 1940 and 1945.
