The 6th Biathlon World Championship took place in Elverum in Norway in 1965 . The team rating and the rating of the relay were still not official. For the team standings it should stay that way. The season, however, was unofficial for the last time in 1965. It was included in the official competition program from 1966 and, with slight rule changes, remained a constant part of the World Championships. It was the first form of competition in biathlon in which the athletes fight directly against each other, which greatly contributed to their attractiveness. In the previous year there had been no biathlon world championships because of the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck .
