Esko Marttinen started with the starting number 1 as the first biathlete to compete in the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 , but was only 23 as the worst Finn. Both his running time of 1: 24: 50.2 hours and five shooting errors, which meant ten penalty minutes, were settled in the middle. Marttinen had more success at the Biathlon World Championships in Zakopane in 1969 , where the Finn competed in the relay competition with Kalevi Vähäkylä , Mauri Röppänen and Mauno Peltonen . As the final runner of his squadron, he led them to the bronze rank behind the then dominant squadrons from the USSR and Norway.
