The 5th Biathlon World Championship took place on February 3, 1963 in Seefeld in Tyrol , Austria . Vladimir Melanin from the Soviet Union was able to successfully defend his previous year's title.
The world championship was opened on the evening of February 2, 1963 by the Austrian Federal President Adolf Schärf . The competition, which started at 8:30 am, took place at the end of the pre-Olympic competitions, but did not count as a "pre-Olympic competition". The athletes from the Soviet Union and Finland were considered favorites.

Veikko Hakulinen was superior with his running time, but failed in the shooting. The Austrian participants achieved the following places: 14th place Müller, 15th place Hermann Mayer, 20th place color maker, 32nd place cousin
