The 32nd Biathlon World Championships took place in 1997 in Osrblie , Slovakia .

For the first time, the pursuit competitions were on the program. The 60 fastest runners from the previous World Cup sprint started with the respective time intervals from the sprint. The winner was whoever crossed the finish line first.

In the following year, 1998, the Olympic Winter Games were the regular highlight of the season . Therefore, in 1998 only the not yet Olympic pursuit and the team competition as a world championship were held.
