The 23rd Biathlon World Championships (men) took place in 1987 in Lake Placid , USA . The women 4. Biathlon World Championships were in the same year in the Finnish Lahti played.

In the following year, 1988, there were world championships only for women, because the biathlon sport was only on the program for men that year. The climax of the season for the men came in the following year without the biathlon world championships at the Olympic Games in Calgary , afterwards world championships were held again in 1989 - together for women and men - in Feistritz an der Drau .
