Ville Juha Tapio Piipponen (born June 21, 1957 in Sotkamo ) is a former Finnish biathlete . Between 1981 and 1989 he took part in all major events at the highest level in biathlon, including two Winter Olympics.

Tapio Piipponen was active for Sotkamon Jymy . He was already successful as a junior athlete. At the Biathlon Junior World Championships in 1977 in Lillehammer , he won the silver medal in the individual and bronze in the relay race behind Frank Ullrich . A year later he repeated his success with the relay in Hochfilzen and also won another medal in the individual with bronze behind Andreas Heß and Mathias Jung . He contested his first international men's championship at the Biathlon World Championships in Lahti in 1981 , where he reached the top 15 twice in individual races. In 1983 the Finn missed the relay ranks by just two places in Antholz with Erkki Antila , Risto Punkka and Toivo Mäkykyro as fifth in the relay race. Piipponen also achieved good results at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo . In the individual he was 12th, in the sprint 15th and with Keijo Tiitola , Toivo Mäkykyro and Arto Jääskeläinen as the final runner of the Finnish season seventh. He achieved his greatest success the following year at the World Championships in Ruhpolding , where he won the individual silver medal behind Juri Kaschkarow and Frank-Peter Roetsch . It was the last time a Finnish medal was won at a major event, until 16 years later Paavo Puurunen won the World Cup gold in the same discipline in Pokljuka . A year later , with Juha Tella , Antero Lähde and Arto Jääskeläinen, he just missed a medal in the relay race in fourth place and achieved further good results with ranks eleven in the individual and nine in the sprint. Also in 1987 in Lake Placid Piipponen was able to reach the top ten in sixth place. Good results also followed at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary . He was eighth in the individual, seventh in the sprint and only missed the ranks of the top ten with the relay as 12th. The last major international event was the Biathlon World Championships in 1989 in Feistritz , where he narrowly missed a final place in eleventh in the individual. Piipponen also regularly reached the points in the Biathlon World Cup .
