Frank Ullrich (born January 24, 1958 in Trusetal , Schmalkalden district , GDR ) is a former biathlete and former national coach of the German men's national team in biathlon. From 2010 to 2012 he was head coach of the offspring, from 2012 to 2015 national coach for cross-country skiers . On March 15, 2015, he announced his resignation.
He is retired and has been working on a voluntary basis in the Technical Commission of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) since 2010. In addition, he ran as a candidate for the SPD Thuringia in the state election in 2019 .
Athletic career
Active biathlete
As early as 1967 he took part in the GDR children's championships. Wido Kühne was his coach at the time. In 1972 Ullrich won the relay and achieved second place over 5 km at the Spartakiade .
In 1975 he was junior world champion in the relay. At the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck , he won bronze in the 4x7.5 km relay. In 1978 and 1979 he became world champion over the 10 km distance. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , he repeated the Olympic success and also won over the 20 km silver and a gold medal over 10 km. For these successes he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. In 1984 at the opening ceremony of the Winter Games in Sarajevo , he was the flag bearer of the GDR Olympic delegation, but could not win another medal. At the end of his career in 1986 he was awarded the Star of Friendship of Nations in silver.
Trainer
After the active career, which he ended after the death of his wife, and a successful study at the DHfK , Frank Ullrich became coach of the GDR national team in 1987 and coached the German biathlon team since 1998.
After the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Ullrich succeeded Norbert Baier as the national coach of the men in a team with Fritz Fischer and has won 4 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals since the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . There are also a number of medals at world championships.
Ullrich ended his job as national coach for men after the 2010 season. Since the 2010/2011 season he has been the head coach for the next generation and is therefore also responsible for the “Course Group II” of the German national biathlon team. In April 2012 it was announced that Ullrich will be the head coach of the German cross-country skiers and will succeed Jochen Behle . He resigned from this office on March 15, 2015.
Ullrich was acquitted after several investigations into doping. In 2009 a commission of the German Ski Association confirmed that it had an "unconsciously controlled displacement mechanism" in the matter of doping.

Ullrich ran for the state election in Thuringia 2019 in the constituency of Schmalkalden-Meiningen II and on state list position 15 of the SPD for the Thuringian state parliament .
Private life
Ullrich's father was a referee in biathlon. Frank Ullrich is an honorary citizen of his home town Trusetal .
