Christian Ehrhoff (born July 6, 1982 in Moers ) is a former German ice hockey player . The defender played 862 games in the NHL career and 314 in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) as well as 118 international matches for the German national team. Ehrhoff began his professional career in 1999 with the Krefeld Penguins in the German Ice Hockey League and won the German championship in the 2002/03 season . He then moved to North America and played with the San Jose Sharks , Vancouver Canucks , Buffalo Sabers , Pittsburgh Penguins , Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks until spring 2016 . Internationally, Ehrhoff belonged to the German national selection for many years. In the home World Cup in 2010 he reached with Germany in fourth place and won at the Winter Olympics in 2018 the silver medal.

Career

Early years

Christian Ehrhoff grew up in Moers . He often accompanied his sister, who did figure skating , to the ice rink, where he worked on his running technique. After Ehrhoff saw his first ice hockey game on television and attended a game with his parents, he wanted to play ice hockey himself. He got his first ice skates at the age of six and started playing ice hockey in the junior department of the Krefeld Penguins . His favorite childhood players were Pawel Bure , whom he valued above all for his running qualities, Wayne Gretzky and, as a German role model, Uwe Krupp . Ehrhoff was used as both a defender and a striker in his early youth.

In Germany (1999-2003)

Ehrhoff began his professional career with the Krefeld Penguins in the German Ice Hockey League . The left shooter was eligible to play for Krefeld in his first season with a sponsorship license , but played mainly at EV Duisburg under coach Rico Rossi . In Duisburg he reached an important position in the team after a short time and was on the ice in many situations, both in outnumbered and outnumbered games. Later he established himself as a regular player with the penguins.

In the 2001 NHL Entry Draft he was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the fourth round in a total of 106th place. He took part in training sessions with the San Jose Sharks, but was sent back to the Krefeld Penguins on September 11, 2001. There he reached in the 2001/02 season his hitherto highest point yield with seven goals and 17 assists for a total of 24 points in 46 games. Ehrhoff could not completely convince in the Sharks training camp in 2002 and he returned to Germany for another year. By that time, the Sharks' general manager, Doug Wilson , was already convinced that Ehrhoff would be able to stay in North America for the following season. The defender ended his last season in Germany in the spring of 2003 by winning the German championship wearing the Krefeld Pinguine jersey. He increased his best points in one season to 27 points, including ten goals and 17 assists. In 14 playoff games , the defender contributed three goals and six assists for his team. After this successful season, Ehrhoff decided to make the final leap to North America.

San Jose Sharks (2003-2009)

At the beginning of his involvement with the San Jose Sharks, the defender was often sent to the team's farm team, the Cleveland Barons , in the American Hockey League (AHL), but became the sixth defender in San Jose over the course of the season and so emerged 41 NHL games in its first season. He was also invited to the NHL YoungStars Game , where the best rookies of the year competed against each other. The lockout in the 2004/05 season meant that Ehrhoff spent the entire year with the Cleveland Barons, as he did not return to his home country like many of his European colleagues. In this way, he gained sufficient game practice on the North American ice rinks, which are smaller than in Europe. He was one of the Barons' best players and was nominated for the AHL All-Star Classic . With 35 points in 79 games, he was the team's best defender and fifth-best scorer for the Barons. At the start of the 2005/06 season Ehrhoff was back in the NHL squad and established himself as a regular in San Jose. He posted 23 points in 64 games and was particularly strong in the playoffs when he scored eight points in 11 games. In the 2006/07 season Ehrhoff developed into a specialist in the strong power play of the Sharks and, despite the great competition in the Sharks' defense network, was part of the permanent staff. In the following game year, the German improved his game despite some problems at the beginning of the season, especially in the defensive area, which gave him more and more ice age. The following summer, after his contract had expired and he was considered a restricted free agent , he received a new three-year contract on improved terms, although the team was rebuilt as a result of a coach change on the defensive.

Under the new head coach Todd McLellan , the German again filled a somewhat more offensive role and continued to improve his game. At the end of the regular season he went with the team as the best point team in the league in the playoffs, where the Sharks failed in the first round. As a result of the renewed failure, the management restructured the team in some positions. Ehrhoff, who was handed over to the Vancouver Canucks together with Brad Lukowich at the end of August 2009, also fell victim to this change . In return, San Jose received the youngsters Daniel Rahimi and Patrick White .

Vancouver Canucks (2009-2011)

Ehrhoff as a player for the Vancouver Canucks in 2010

At his new club in Vancouver Ehrhoff quickly became a regular player and developed into one of the most attacking defenders in the league. His first goal in the new team he scored on October 5, 2009 in a 3-5 defeat of the Vancouver Canucks against the Columbus Blue Jackets . A month later, on November 20, 2009, Ehrhoff was able to book his first NHL game with two goals against the Colorado Avalanche , in which he also contributed a template for his team. With 44 scorer points, 14 goals and an average playing time of 22:47 minutes per game, Ehrhoff set new personal career records in the 2009/10 season and with these led all the statistics of the Canucks defenders. With 44 scorer points in one season, Ehrhoff set the record for the highest point yield of a German defender, which was held by Uwe Krupp at the time . He also improved his plus / minus balance from −12 in the previous season to +36, which together with Daniel Sedin's statistics (also a rating of +36) exceeded the team record of the Canucks of Pawel Vladimirovich Bure and Marek Malík by one point . In the 2010 playoffs , the defender reached seven points in 12 games, but the Vancouver Canucks were eliminated against the eventual Stanley Cup winners Chicago Blackhawks in the second round of the playoffs. Ehrhoff's achievements were recognized with the Babe Pratt Trophy , which is awarded annually to the best defender in the Canucks squad. The choice of the annual trophy winner is made by the fans.

The native of Moerser received this award in the 2010/11 season , when he raised his career record to 50 points and found himself among the ten defenders in the league with the highest points. Ehrhoff mostly played with his teammates Dan Hamhuis and Alexander Edler in a defense association. As in the previous year, the Canucks were able to reach the playoffs for the Stanley Cup, they even won the Presidents' Trophy as the most successful team in the NHL thanks to their consistently good game in the regular season . In the 2010/11 playoffs they failed only in the seventh and decisive game of the final for the Stanley Cup against the Boston Bruins and Ehrhoff's compatriot Dennis Seidenberg . The Canucks had serious injury problems at the end of the playoffs, which also included regular players like Mikael Samuelsson , Dan Hamhuis, Mason Raymond , Alexander Edler and Andrew Alberts .

Buffalo Sabers (2011-2014)

Ehrhoff on the ice for the Buffalo Sabers

Ehrhoff's three-year contract, which he had signed while he was still in San José, expired at the end of the 2010/11 season. Since negotiations about a contract extension were unsuccessful, Vancouver transferred on June 28, 2011 its until July 1 exclusive negotiating rights to the New York Islanders , who submitted a four-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft . Negotiations with the Islanders also failed, so on June 29, 2011 they transferred his exclusive negotiating rights to the Buffalo Sabers in exchange for a four-round vote in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft . A day later Ehrhoff agreed on a ten-year contract with the Buffalo Sabers. He is said to have earned $ 40 million during that time . The payments of his salary are staggered: In the first two years, the defender earns nine million dollars per season, in the years three to six of the contract four million. Ehrhoff earns three million US dollars in the seventh year and one million US dollars each in the last three years of the contract. Ehrhoff stated that he wanted to wait and see what team and salary choices he would have in the free agent market. As a fixed goal, the German defender aimed at a contract with a possible aspirant for the Stanley Cup. When he received the offer from the Buffalo Sabers, he saw good opportunities for his sporting goals and accordingly agreed to the terms of the contract.

His first competitive match as a defender of the Buffalo Sabers completed Ehrhoff on 7 October 2011 as part of the NHL Premiere in Finland Helsinki against the Anaheim Ducks . In this game, he provided his team with an assist for the eventual 4-1 victory when Thomas Vanek scored . The German scored his first own goal on October 18, 2011 against the Montréal Canadiens . A fist fight against opponent Troy Brouwer gave the native of Moers his first injury of the season on December 31, 2011 in a game against the Washington Capitals . At the same time, the Sabers, who were plagued by serious injury concerns in the 2011/12 season, also missed regular players Tyler Myers , Ville Leino , Corey Tropp , Tyler Ennis and Nathan Gerbe on the starting line-up. Ehrhoff's injury was initially classified as severe, but the defender returned to the Sabers team on January 24, 2012 after missing eleven games of the season. After the engagement of Alexander Sulzer in a swap between the Sabers and Ehrhoff's former team, the Vancouver Canucks, the two German defenders played together from now on in a defensive pair. Both players knew each other through the German national team , for which they played at the 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2010 World Cup . In an encounter between the Sabers and the Montréal Canadiens, Christian Ehrhoff reached the milestone of 200 assists in his NHL career with his submission to a goal by Cody Hodgson on March 21, 2012. Ehrhoff suffered the second injury of the season in a game against Washington Capitals: the defender collided knee-to-knee with opponent Troy Brouwer in front of his own goal; while Brouwer was able to continue playing, Ehrhoff had to sit out the rest of the game with an injured left knee and also missed the last three games of the season. Although Buffalo had 88 points to show after playing 82 games in the 2011/12 season, the team narrowly missed the playoffs. Ehrhoff missed the playoffs for the first time in his NHL career with a club. Due to the NHL lockout that began on September 15, 2012, the German defender decided to return to his former DEL team, the Krefeld Penguins. As part of this commitment, the Krefeld Pinguine agreed to raise the sum insured of 20,000 euros per month to allow Ehrhoff to accrue. On September 17, 2012, the club's board of directors approved the funding.

For the duration of the NHL lockout of the 2012 season, the offensive defender played again for the Krefeld Penguins in the DEL . After the agreement in the wage dispute between the NHL and the NHLPA players' union , Ehrhoff returned to his NHL team and made his first appearance at the Buffalo Sabers season opener on January 20, 2013 against the Philadelphia Flyers . Just like at the end of the previous season, Christian Ehrhoff played with his compatriot Alexander Sulzer on the Blue Line . After the injury Sulzer on cruciate ligament in the game against the New York Islanders on February 23, 2013, the surgery for the Kaufbeurer defensive partner and meant his season, Ehrhoff played now often first with teammate Tyler Myers together and after his injury with Andrej Sekera in Defensive duo. Throughout the season, the defense of the Sabers in particular was repeatedly exposed to harsh criticism, as the results of the defensive work left something to be desired, which is also underpinned by the 24th place among the 30 NHL teams in the category of goals conceded over the season. Furthermore, bad luck with injuries made the Buffalo Sabers more effective. Despite these negative reviews, the attacking defender was able to emerge as one of the main pillars of the back team. The consistent results in both the defensive and offensive sides of the game were praised again and again over the course of the season, also due to the disappointing results of Tyler Myers, a franchise player of the Sabers, who made a negative impression with major defensive problems.

In June 2014, the Sabers prematurely terminated the seven-year contract with Ehrhoff, whereby he received compensation. The reason given was the team's poor performance (weakest in terms of points in the 2013/14 season ) and the associated attempt to rebuild staff. Above all, however, a rule change in the contract provisions of the NHL made Ehrhoff's ten-year contract dangerous for the Sabers, as an early retirement of the defender would have resulted in high fines for the team from Buffalo.

Pittsburgh Penguins (2014-2015)

After the contract with the Sabers was terminated, Ehrhoff was an unrestricted free agent and was able to start negotiations for a new contract with all teams in the league. Although several teams were interested in the services of the offensive defender, the latter decided on a new employer early on in the engagement phase. He signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 1, 2014 for a salary of $ 4 million. In addition to Ehrhoff, compatriot and former teammate from the times in San José, goalkeeper Thomas Greiss, came to the Penguins as a new signing on the same day . A few days later, Marcel Goc extended his contract with the Penguins. The center was also a former teammate Ehrhoffs and played with this four years at the club from California. In interviews immediately after the move, Ehrhoff stated at the beginning of July 2014 that the reason for signing his contract in Pittsburgh was mainly for sporting reasons; he wanted to play in a team that had a chance of winning the Stanley Cup. He especially praised the strikers Sidney Crosby and Yevgeny Malkin and their offensive production as the main strength of the team.

Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks (2015/16)

After just one year, in which the Penguins were already defeated by the New York Rangers in the first playoff round , Ehrhoff's expiring contract in Pittsburgh was not extended, so he joined the Los Angeles Kings as a free agent in August 2015 and signed a one-year contract signed. Ehrhoff showed mostly moderate performances at the Kings in the first half of the 2015/16 season and was even removed from the squad in the meantime before he was transferred to the farm team Ontario Reign in the American Hockey League via the waiver list in February 2016 . Shortly before the end of the transfer deadline, Ehrhoff was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Rob Scuderi . There he played until the end of the season. After the end of the 2015/16 season , his contract with the Blackhawks was not renewed.

Cologne Sharks (2016-2018)

After taking part in the World Cup of Hockey with the European selection , Ehrhoff received a trial contract with the Boston Bruins at the end of September 2016 , but decided to leave the Bruins in October. He returned to his home country, on October 24, 2016, the Kölner Haie from the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) announced his commitment. After leaving the playoff quarter-finals in March 2018, he announced the end of his playing career.

Ehrhoff prepares for a face-off at the 2010 Olympic Games before

Ehrhoff made his debut for a selection of the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) at the U18 Junior World Championship in 1999 , which took place in Füssen and Kaufbeuren . The defender was also part of the team the following year and took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in Switzerland in 2000 . In this tournament, the German selection finished seventh in the end. Another year later Ehrhoff took part in the U20 Junior World Championship of Division I, which took place in Germany , in which the German team missed promotion to the top division. Ehrhoff was at the U20 Junior World Championship of Division I in 2002 , which took place at the host cities Kapfenberg and Zeltweg in neighboring Austria , with three goals and seven assists the highest point defender of the tournament. In addition, in contrast to the previous year, the promotion to the top division was achieved. In both years, 2001 and 2002, Christian Ehrhoff was the defender with the most points of all teams in the World Cup and was named the best defender at the end of both tournaments.

Due to his good performance in the junior national teams, Ehrhoff was appointed to the squad of the senior national team for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . He was the second youngest player in the tournament and played seven tournament games. The German national team reached the quarter-finals, which the US national team won with a 5-0 win. In the same year Ehrhoff also took part in the 2002 World Cup, in which he collected five points in seven games. Germany survived the group stage but were defeated 6-2 by Sweden in the quarter-finals . In the following year 2003 , the German team failed in the quarter-finals, Ehrhoff contributed no scorer point for the national team. After completing his first season in the NHL, the defender played in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey . A year later Ehrhoff returned for the national team: at the 2005 World Cup , he gave an assist in six games. After Germany did not qualify for the final rounds with the penultimate place at the end of the world championship, the national team won one of the three subsequent games of the relegation round with Ehrhoff, but this performance did not prevent relegation to Division I for the next year.

On December 21, 2005, Christian Ehrhoff was nominated for the national team, which was to appear in the context of the 2006 Winter Olympics, together with his then teammate of the San Jose Sharks, Marcel Goc . The defender's only goal at the Olympic tournament was a 5-1 loss to Canada , and another assist brought him two points in five games. Germany did not qualify for the finals as the team did not win a preliminary round match. Ehrhoff received his third appointment to the squad of an Olympic team for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . Ehrhoff did not get any scorer points in four games, but was the player with the most ice age of the entire team. Germany were eliminated by Canada with an 8-2 defeat before the quarter-finals.

After the Vancouver Canucks were eliminated from the NHL playoffs in 2010 , Ehrhoff moved into the team for the simultaneous World Cup , which took place in Germany. Since he could only join the national team after his NHL team was eliminated, he missed the national team's first three games. In his six games, the defender managed to score a goal and provide an assist. The selection of Germany surprisingly reached the semi-finals, in which they had to admit defeat Russia . In this game Ehrhoff managed his only template, at the end of the game he was honored as the best player on his team. Germany lost the game for third place against the Swedish selection 1: 3 and missed the bronze medal. Fourth place was the best placement since 1953 , when Germany won the silver medal. As in the 2010 Winter Olympics, Ehrhoff was also the player with the highest average ice age of his team in this tournament with 23:34 minutes per match. He was named to the tournament's All-Star team along with goalkeeper Dennis Endras .

Since Ehrhoffs Buffalo Sabers after the regular time of the 2012/13 season on the 12th place in the Eastern Conference occupied and thus the Stanley Cup play-offs could not reach for the second time in a row, was a participation of Ehrhoff at the World Cup 2013 in Nothing in the way of Stockholm and Helsinki . On April 22, 2013, the press announced that he would support the DEB team. As a reason for participating, he announced in an interview that, especially after the German national team failed to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics, “it [is] not right to criticize the DEB or German ice hockey and then not turn up to change things ”( Christian Ehrhoff : Interview). In addition to Ehrhoff, NHL striker Marcel Goc from the Florida Panthers finally confirmed his participation in the World Cup in Sweden and Finland. At the time of the first nominations before the start of the World Cup, you were the only two NHL players who were appointed to the German team. Ehrhoff was named captain of a DEB selection for the first time in his international career.

As a result, the defender played the world championships in 2016 and 2017 , each of which reached the quarter-finals. The successful Olympic qualification for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea , also took place during this period . He also represented the Europe team at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey , where he finished second with the team. As part of the 2018 Olympic ice hockey tournament , Ehrhoff reached the final with the DEB Olympic selection, at the end of which, after a 3: 4 defeat in overtime against the Russian team, he won the silver medal - synonymous with Ehrhoff's greatest career success. At the end of the Olympic Winter Games, Ehrhoff was chosen by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) as Germany's flag bearer at the closing ceremony, after having previously been in second place behind Eric Frenzel in the election for the flag bearer at the opening ceremony .

Ehrhoff played a total of 118 international A matches for Germany during his career.

Play style

Ehrhoff was seen as an attacking defender who built his team's game forward. His running qualities were often praised, which he particularly benefits from fast moves. Ehrhoff's hard shot, which in earlier years often lacked precision, and his good offensive drive led to long ice ages in power play for his NHL teams . A frequently mentioned point of criticism of Ehrhoff's game is the inconsistency in the defensive game, which sometimes led to errors under pressure in the past. Due to constant work on his defensive game, Ehrhoff received more and more Ice Age in defensive situations.
